Do all Labs climb fences?

I rescued a dog that is part lab part german shepard, about a year ago. He is the sweetest dog, loving, and such a big baby. I have had to recently put him on a runner; which I am not happy with, because he needs to be able to run. I am having the issues of him climbing the fence though; has anyone ever heard of this before? Does anyone know what I can do to stop him from doing this; besides keeping him tied up?

I've had 3 Black Labs. My first dug under my fence most of the time. I never caught him climbing over. However, my neighbor used to tell me when I wasn't home he would climb over the gate for my fence. I never caught him climbing over. He had a set of under the fence tunnels so he could get out & stay out all day while I was at work. When I'd come home, I'd see him standing in the street about one block from my house. You could see him look up & freak out because Mom was almost home. He'd take off running like a madman for his first tunnel. By the time I turned into my driveway, he'd be standing inside the fence staring at me like...where the hell you been, I've been waiting on you all freakin day!!! I didn't want to tie him up either as it would have drove him NUTS!!! Sadly, he let himself out one day & the dog catcher caught him. They wouldn't let me have him back as he was a habitual offender. They eventually put him down. Then I felt guilty because I should have tied him up. I have 2 Black Labs now. The male was terrible about digging holes, but he never tries to escape. I adopted a girlfriend for him & they play together & he has pretty much stopped digging the holes. A friend of mine breeds Labs & he said he had one that climbed an 8 foot kennel & he couldn't break him from doing that. So, I think whatever bad habit they exhibit, you just need to find a way to distract them. It has been my experience that they start doing it as a puppy & just NEVER stop. I know mine escaped the first time at 6 weeks old & he just refused to stop!!!

You could try changing the fence. Making it higher or just do something that he would not be able to jump over it.
