Has Gaming Become Too Complicated And Intense?

The only time I come across serious gaming these days is via adverts...and they're intense enough for me! Games such as Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto..I wouldn't know where to start!
I come from a generation where gaming wasn't so intense and complicated. A man I lived with in the early 90s had (I think) a Commodore 64 and the only way we could play games was on floppy disc. There were two games I was addicted to, Bubble Bobble, that I played with the guy in question and Asteroid, a game I could play on my own and I was obsessed with acquiring loads of points in that one.
Years ago I had a calculator that played Space Invaders and I remember being obsessed with acquiring loads of points on that too. This suggests to me that if I had been born about 20 years ago the likes of Grand Theft Auto would be a normal game for me to play as I wouldn't know any different.
Having said that my nephew is 20 years old and isn't really obsessed with gaming. He has a Sony Playstation but he has often mentioned his Sega Mega Drive to me that he used to play at our house when he was about 6. He had another Sega at his own house round the corner from his Nan's. The games that stand out for me from that time were Mario Karts, Sonic the Hedgehog and an F1 game that I can't remember the name of but it was great fun to play.
Does anyone agree with me? Has gaming become a bit too intense? My nephew says some of his friends are addicted to violent games where there is online competition from around the world, comparing scores, talking to one another via a headset, that type of thing. I really think he misses the days of the Sega Mega Drive.
How about you?
I miss Bubble Bobble off the Commodore 64. There are copies of it online but it ain't the same!

I admit that gaming, nowadays, got more complicated yet much exciting than before. Some of the games I played (mostly first-person shooting games e.g. Modern Warfare) are more detailed when it comes to graphics and special effects. The story-line is also awesome. It's like being close to reality. Another game which I considered a competitive fun game is Grand Theft Auto. I've experience it all. From the first release of GTA until the latest. Honestly, I got addicted to it. I've never stop playing the game until I finish the story. It's pretty amazing you see. The gameplay contains a combination of action, adventure, driving, and occasional role-playing, stealth and racing elements which you will experience during the game. Yet, it has also gained its controversy for having violent themes. During the 90's, video games are actually not as consistent as compared to the games being played today. Before, you can only experience mostly 2D games. But, now you can clearly distinguish the small details which you can see during games. Thanks to our high technology today. They offered the people of the world especially those gamers like me a much more exciting life when it comes to gaming.

Does it not worry you that you may end up playing games rather than experiencing real life? Or - worse still, confusing the two? Do you know what I mean?
Thanks for your contribution and welcome to MyLot.

That's a relief, I was getting worried there for a moment. Thanks for responding again too, thank you.

I admit playing video games is fun. But, still, experiencing life is much better for me. You can't stay being a kid forever who is addicted to gaming. You got to move on with your life. I bet there is much more fun in real life than life experienced during gaming time. So, I agree with you. Thanks for your concerned.

I found Space-Invadors quite addictive and then I noticed that it appeared in nearly every pub and people were booking their place to get on it! I decided that I would have to quit because I found it an incredible waste of time. People who had it in their home seemed to be ignoring family and friends too!
I later got a Commodore Amiga with floppy disks, but not for gaming but for putting titles on our home videos which was much more enjoyable to me. I am pleased that I stopped myself getting to involved with computer gaming as now I have no interest in it whatsoever and don't feel hooked on anything in any way. _Derek

It is a difficult one to answer but when I was a kid, we (us boys) were encouraged to be very competitive in sports and games and I guess this sort of "conditioning" got through - we were just out to win at any odds! This sort of thing tends to stay then. We are all conditioned to compete by just living our daily lives. Getting a good education, a home of our own, a good job, more money etc. This I believe is the competitive streak that has been instilled in us throughout our life, by society as it keeps the worlds economy turning. If nobody was to reach out for a better life, then the economies of the world would grind to a halt. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on each of our values. Some people value material wealth, whilst others strive for a spiritual wealth. Most of us are somewhere in between.
All this I believe is reflected in gaming - the desire to win, the desire to be better.. It is interesting that Buddha said on his enlightenment that desire was the source of all suffering. We can't win all the time, so I guess there is a sort of fear that keeps us striving for the safety and security that we believe that winning can bring us. Just my opinion.. _Derek

You have a lot of willpower. I like that! Have you any idea why it seems to be men that are the addicted gamers? Whether that is true or not I don't know. In my experience it's the women who spend all their time on Facebook or Bingo (lol) but the guys are the ones playing fighting games and such-like. I read somewhere that women become bored and don't become hooked on games whereas men don't like to be beaten and can be on a game for hours.
I'm glad my nephew has "seen the light" and goes out enjoying himself instead. Good for him!

yeah gaming has become complicated and intense and with this they have become more fun.
in complicated games you need to apply logic and brain and play which sharpens your brain and also it is fun. i love games with intense graphics because while playing them i fell as if i myself is playing it. the feeling is awesome.

Doesn't your brain hurt with all that thinking? That's what I mean about the intensity of it. Win at all costs.

I myself is a gamer, I grow up playing the Family Computer or the Nintendo Gaming System.
By complicated you mean it is hard to play? Even before there are really games that is hard to play and there are games that can be played easily. I don't think games today is much more complicated than before. I think most if not all of the games now has a tutorial so if you think it is complicated you can always turn on the tutorial and it will help you as you play the games. Some games has the tutorial part of the game. In my experience of playing the first Warcraft, I admit I did not understand first but then as I play it longer I begin to understand and liked the game. It was the first time that I was introduced to a strategy game and I must say it was addicting. I started playing the Grand Theft Auto on its third series. I played it in my playstation2 and I was very amazed. It was one of my dream game, it was an open world. GTA is not really that hard to play since you can do anything as it is an open world game. And because of its success a lot of copy cat emerges but I think nothing can beat the GTA series.
I think the intensity of the games is just because of the technology. Before you cannot really appreciate the game because of its graphics but it is because of the gameplay. The intensity of the game is slowly showing up as the graphics becomes better and better because of the improve technology. When I was playing Famicom/NES there were games that was about shooting, take for example the Contra, but you cannot feel the intensity of that game for the reason that visual and audio is not also that intense due to weak technology. Compare it with todays shooting games, say for example the Call of Duty series, you can really feel the intensity because of it's very good visual and audio, Graphics and audio is so good and surreal that you can always feel you are inside the game and thus you can always feel the intensity of the game.

This is exactly what I meant. In my opinion it shouldn't really matter if the graphics are intense and you feel that you are "in" the game. I am from a different generation, it seems, so cannot understand why you should have to feel that way. A game is a game and shouldn't be taken so seriously. You should be able to play a game for an hour or so then come off without feeling the need to go back on it and play for 15 hours at a time. You probably don't do that (and I'm not insinuating that you do) but immersing yourself so much in a game is, to me, wrong and I reckon there should be a timer on them. Is there a timer on them, I'd be interested to know?

Hmmm..Did you mean a timer to turn off the games when the time is up :) ..that would be a good idea but I don't think there is one. It is really a choice if you want to waste all your time on gaming. But gaming has a positive side also. Yahoo has just release an article today on the gaming section of its benefits. I cannot blame other gamers also who are taking gaming seriously because they are making it as their livelihood. There are lots of game tournament now and they are really giving a huge amount of price.
I am a gamer but I have a strict schedule in playing. I too have a family to feed, I have a job and gaming, like watching movies, is just part of my entertainment. I have a lot of real friends and not cyber friends and I played real sport like basketball thrice a week. I am very selective of my games, I only played computer games that has a good rating as to not waste my time. :)

Yeah gaming is an unhealthy habit and recently the amount of games being sold/played is skyrocketing. I mean the total U.S. sales in PC games in 2004 was $1.1 billion dollars (year) and the portable software sales in 2004 was $6.2 billion now i probably has rose like 30% higher. The problem is that recent games are much more addicting to some than any outside sport, since many kids don't like to sweat or exercise.

I myself is addicted to either online games or PC games because I find it enjoyable and exciting to play. I sometimes even forget about time and doing daily important cleaning activities. I also participate on some outside sport activities such as soccer and basketball but I prefer to play it on games right now because just like what you have said, I hate sweating.

Goodness me hisoka147 you should read again what you have said there. In my opinion you should carry on with your outside sport as that is much better for you my friend. You will put loads of weight on if you sit in front of a computer all day...I should know although it's not games I'm addicted to, it's this site lol.
As for you kengoshika, wow, that is amazing, the amount of games sold/played in the US. I don't know the figures for the UK but I should imagine they will be high here as well. When I'm at Mum's house kids will come out into the street and "play" but it's not like how we used to play. They just run around shouting and screaming and if anyone tells them off they look at you like you're scum and make excuses. They never, ever accept being told off with grace.
Thank God I don't have children!

I agree with you about the game intensity. I never really got addicted to any game. My favorites had lots of colors, like Bejeweled and Tetris. I also played a spelling/typing game. All of that was when I was over forty.

I have played Bejeweled Blitz whilst I was in Facebook but, due to the competitive nature of the game (I was becoming addicted) I cancelled my account. That wasn't the only reason but it was certainly a factor.

well..in some ways it's better..but the controllers are what gets me.
some have way too many buttons to get used to.something like the first nintendo
square paddles had the best configuration,i thought.
i am glad they have better save capacities tho.i hated the old atari system where you couldn't save the game at all.

I would suggest there are not many years between us because I have fond memories of playing those games you mention although I played them on an old Atari console.
Gaming has certainly changed and where it was once the simple affair of jumping from platform to platform or shooting aliens the games now seem to take you off into new worlds where you have a series of missions to compete using different skills. I tried playing one of these new games a few years ago and gave up because it was just too complex and not fun.
So give me pacman, space invaders and donkey kong any day of the weak over these new games.

You have just jogged my memory! Donkey Kong, I remember that one too. The only game I play fairly regularly on my computer is Restaurant Rush. I'm one of those people who can rarely afford to buy games so I play free trials. At the moment I am playing Fairy Treasure, a lovely relaxing game where there's no pressure. I have been known to play Fizzball as well which is highly entertaining. Other than that I never play anything elaborate.
As far as my ages goes, it's 44.

Games have definitly come a long way and there are a lot of very intense and graphic games. I have always loved playing games but the "worlds" are vast and you can get caught up for hours and hours playing with some of them. I miss Mario Bros and Donkey Kong...they were awesome..lol

Mu two teenaged children are very much into playing Xbox and playstation. i have seen the games they play. Some of them are very graphic and detailed. I have a hard time following the plan of some of these games. Whatever happened to simpler games and pleasure? Welcome to the electronic age! I will leave the gaming to my kids!

YEs gaming has widen the scope and categories. If your want gaming is more relaxing there are free games online that is suited for you like pogo , facebook games and many more free online games. However, there is more intense games around which include fast reflex, gore, violent and intense thinking and adapting to the game AI.
Even games like DInar dash, farm dash, and such still require thinking and timing.
Yes i think kids nowsdays are brain trained early to counter this kind of games. This is the advantange ,

Well, the new games are for a specific clientel...the tipe that played such games for a long time...for example someone that played Prince of Persia 1 would definatly do good at 4...when a non gamer would do good at 1 but would suck at 4! Its all about the market!

Well, when Tom (my nephew) was at Mum's after school, where I lived in those days, he would play his Sega downstairs on Mum's telly. Sometimes his mates would come round and there was much shouting going on..and he was only 6! Mum would tell him off in a nice way and advise him not to take it so seriously. This is probably why he's not that interested in intense gaming now. I think he played his Sega downstairs at his own house too but I can't be sure about that.
If he'd been left to his own devices upstairs I think he'd become more aggressive. I don't believe in isolating children like that, even if they want to be isolated, it's dangerous. Either play games downstairs or not at all.
It's a good job I don't have kids isn't it? Boy, I'd be strict!!

Ya, it really has gotten a bit intense lately. I think it is because of the competition idea. People are able to face each other head to head now. Instead of just playing 1 at a time and comparing scores. This is especially true with first person shooter games, such as call of duty, or halo.

Do they have the option of just playing in Single Player mode? I'd hate the idea of having to compete with others, especially online. No wonder you don't see kids playing out these days..or if they do it's to let of steam lol.
