Real price of i-phone 3G and 3Gs

friends i am really confused about the real price of i-phone. When i visit the apple.com site, it says $99 for 3G but when i ordered it with a friend in USA, he said it's $99 but only if you take a two years service from AT&T network, otherwise it very expensive, more than 300$. What is the truth about it? can anyone help me?

According to the Apple website that price which is the $99 (16 GB) and $199 (32 GB) are only for qualified customers (the new ones which will require new two-year AT&T rate plan) and the price which is $300 is for the current iPhone customers of AT&T which would like to upgrade their iPhone to the latest iPhone 4. And for the contract free iPhone would be $699 and $799.
