How do you get rid of mice if you have pets?

We have recently cleaned up a big weed ection in our backyard which the previous tennants never cleaned & our real estate said for us to leave it too but we went ahead & cleaned it uo & it looks great...however, there must have been a mouse nest in amongst it because since we cleaned it up, we have had mice in the house. Now I have 2 what I would say STUPID staffies (dogs) that are my pets...I say stupid because they think of nothing but their stomachs...how would you get rid of mice if you were in this situation? I can't use rat sack because if the dogs eat the mice, they will get sick...I have seen one of my dogs get his nose caught in the trap trying to eat the peanut butter I put on it for the mice...what do you think would be effetive other than trying to put the traps out of reach of the dogs?

Why dont you at least try to seperate your dogs at least for one day and then put the trap. Its just going to be for one day just for you to catch those pesky mice all over the place. If you dont do something about it these mice might even proliferate and if that happens you will end up have lots of problems on your own, i believe one day of seperation or maybe you try to cage them at least for a day until those mice are caught already. Then when the mice are gone back to normal for your lazy dogs lol .

I have actually thought of going down that path.

I have had mice in my house recently and even though I have a cat he isnt very good with the whole catching and killing them. he just considers them an extra toy to play with! I would try the humane traps. They are just like a little tunnel so your dogs wont be able to eat the bait. If you put bait in the mice will enter and get trapped inside. If you do this though you need to take the mice you catch at least a mile away from your home or they will just find their way back. This is actually true as when we had a live mouse we we're going to take it away but it managed to escape and just scuttled its way back to the house. It was useful in a way as we managed to find where they were getting in the house and block it up. You can also buy some electronic things that plugs in to a wall. They let out a high pitched noise that neither you or your pets should be able to hear but the mice will hate it and should leave. The problem with using this method is that it is expensive to just buy one of these to plug in but depending on hte size of your house you will probably need to buy a few. I have also heard mixed reviews about their success and some people have said that their pets or evcen themselves can hear it etc. Good luck in getting rid of them!

There are several types of traps that are self contained that dog can not get into. There is one that is a large metal box, you place the bait/poision in and they can not get out of. You decide if you want to keep them living and release them or if you use poision in it and kill them. The other is a snap trap. You load the peanut butter in the little door the go in and it snaps them. The mouse and the peanut butter both are completely enclosed so no way your dogs can get to it.

I may have to do that coz my dogs can be that stupid that they would try to eat the peanut butter lol

I have found this humane way on the internet, it may help step 1The tube... Take a toilet paper tube and tape a weight (ie: 2 quarters) to one side. Partially flatten the other side so it does not easily roll (see picture). step 2Set the trap... Position your tube halfway extended over a table or counter top, someplace elevated the mice can get to. Set a small raisin in front of the tube. Set another small raisin at the overhanging end of the tube. Place a trash can or deep bucket under the tube. Edit: you can place some padding in the bin, consider they may chew on it. While the fall is probably not pleasant … step 3The catch! Congratulations! Hopefully you will have demonstrated your superior intellect and caught a mouse. Now you get to exercise your capability for compassion and take care of your new pet or set it free somewhere else. As noted by another reader it may be a good idea to release them in an area with another potential food source. I got this off this website http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple--No-Kill--Mouse-Trap/

That definitely is a good thing but I don't think hubby or the dogs would like the new pets lol. I would have to take the mice well away from my area so there was no chance that they would come back to visit me
