Its very rare that a cell phone manufacturer makes money directly off of cell phones - which is why mail in rebates are so rampant in this industry. Cell phone manufacturers survive off of kickbacks from their carrier partners, which is why many handsets are only available with certain providers.
It's an odd way of doing business, but there are high costs associated with producing handsets, and by the time a consumer gets to purchase a handset without a commitment, it ends up costing huge big money.

that's what we call business. all business look at profit. if they can get away with a large profit from something, then why not do it. if nobody buys their products at that price, then they will lower it. unfortunately for us, we think the if something is expensive, it's probably a great product. so the companies win. they've sucked people into buying their product.

Its the brand image of nokia that makes them sell phones for very high cost and still many od us buys them even though some small companies are providing the same features with very low cost we are not going for them.
