Do you think clowns are scary?

Some people can't stand clowns and other people enjoy them and think they're fun entertainment. Do you like clowns, or do you find them scary and run the other way???? (I always enjoyed them when I saw some at the circus, but I admit, some of them have scary looking makeup!)

I only find some of them entertaining. If somebody attacks a clown, are they only clownin' around???

I have performed with a Christian Clown Troupe, and taken a workshop with a former Ringling Bros. clown. I started doing this because my kids were involved. I lasted longer than they did. I loved the history and meaning of clowning. I am touched by the idea that the "tears" in clown makeup mean that for the moment, while dressed this way he/she is willing to take on the sorrows of the world and give them joy to replace the sorrow. Not scary to me. Yes, sometimes the makeup can look scary.

That's really interesting about the meaning of the tears in a clown's makeup. I had no idea that that is what it stood for. I never really thought about the history of clowns before, I'll have to see if there's something I can read up on it...I bet it's interesting too. That's so neat that you got to work with a former Ringling's clown, I bet you learned some great stuff there! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I was never scared of clowns, but then a few years ago I found out that my little brother has been scared of them all of his life. He says that it's because you never know who the person is underneath that makeup. I can understand that if you're seeing a clown up close, but i dont' think that should make you scared of them at a show like a circus or on television.

Your little brother makes a good point there, it IS (I think) mostly because we don't know who's beneath all that makeup. I still enjoy seeing them in the circus and on tv though, it's probably a lot less threatning to most people. Thanks for sharing!

I've hated clowns since a child. I saw that killer clown movie, and that was it. Then there is a painting we had of a clown when I was younger. It's eyes were painted so it looked like he was following you -- talk about nightmares!

I forgot about that killer clown movie (Killer Clowns From Outer Space...or another one?) I don't like any picture, or eyes, on anything that look like they're following you around. I can see why people would have nightmares!!

no, they are cute. sometimes I feel a bit sad looking on them. actually it is sad that they alwasy have to be and behave happy, don't you think? even if their heart is heavy!

You know, I never really thought about it before, but you're absolutely right. It must be hard to be happy if they're having a heavy heart, or even just a bad day. Thanks for your input!

well if clowns are appealing, cute, funny, i think there's really nothing to be scared of. but remember there are also scary clowns, so i think that should be avoided ahhaahha.^_^

Isn't it funny how one person is scared of clowns, and another isn't? There are some clowns who's makeup is scary looking, but I don't find them to be scary because of it. Thanks for your input!

they are not scary and not funny either. i find them stupidthere is nothing humorous in them to laugh at. it's just the facial expressions with the make up which are an add-on!!no wonder they are almost exctint

god, i hate clowns!!!!!! i got 'surprised' by one when i was about 2 or so, and haven't been the same since. there's just something evil about that fake, painted on smile... but don't worry, Johnny depp's afraid of them too, so we're in good company!
this is coming from someone who sees ghosts on a regular basis

I can see where a lot of people get turned off because of the makeup...it's so unreal! Didn't know that about Johnny Depp, I wonder how many kids have Edward Sissorhands nightmares, lol? Seeing ghosts...now THAT would freak me out!!

How true! There definitely IS a big difference between the funfair clowns and the horror film clowns! Who wouldn't get creeped out after watching the ones in horror movies, lol!

Yes, it's easy to see why the young ones get upset when they see them. Thanks for your response.

I am very scared of clowns. Always have been. My mother had to drag me to see Bozo as a kid. I watch movies like Stephen King's IT and it scares me more then I can say. The only clowns I really don't mind are the hobo style clowns like Emmett Kelly. All the others though terrify me. I actually found out there is a phobia name for this it is: Coulrophobia Don't ask me how they came up with that name but that is what it is called.

Wow! You got to see Bozo, lol! Isn't it funny how after all these years they still use the term and call people a Bozo? I liked Emmett Kelly too, hobo clowns are just different somehow. Thanks for letting us know about what clown-phobia is called, I never would have guessed it from that word though!

i hate pictures of clowns....ewwwwwww. i can handle real clowns at the circus or at a party but pictures or paintings of clowns are too scary for me. even dolls .....some regular girly dolls and clown dolls too. i never felt like this before when i was a child growning up. i started feeling this way maybe a couple of years ago. nothing dramtic happened or anything i just started think they look a little creepy now.
