hi,
It is very difficult situation and there are many reason behind this problem. I too face when mind is thinking to do something and is not able to take rest.Well i think sometimes it is better to do some work or have pills as suggested by other but if it persists it is good to find some easy way as both the options can ruin your health.
I found some interesting link which referred similar problem and tips

I know how you feel. There really are nights when I can't seem to sleep regardless how sleepy I'm already feeling. Worst, is because I don't really have concerns or problems which may have caused me not to be able to sleep.
What I usually do is to think of stories or imagining things in order that I could sleep but if that should not work, then I get up and do something like watch television or do mylot until I really get sleepy. I think it's not good to force oneself to sleep if the mind just doesn't want to do so.

Normally I either read a book, watch TV, or sit in bed with my Laptop, either one of these manages to make me get tired enough to lay down and fall asleep. I don't know if it is the strain that we put on our eyes, or the distraction that makes it work, but it does work.

When you find the perfect answer, come and find me and let me know! I have been suffering from insomnia since I started puberty. Five nights out of the week I'm lucky to get 2-3 hours of sleep. I've been on Ambien, Lunesta, trazadone, Rozerem, Sonata, Restoril - you name it, I've tried it. Or course warm milk, lavender tea and melatonin are completely useless. Whatever I can't turn off in my brain to sleep is much stronger that any prescription. I've just accepted it as a personality quirk. Yeah, I'm moody sometimes, but you should see how clean and organized my house is!
Good luck to you, my friend.

i would listen to some relaxing music which will cool down my mind. Thats what I usually do the night before my exams. i recommend you too to do that. Then you will get sleep. but the music should be very relaxing and pleasant to hear. for example listen to piano music. its very soothing to the mind.

if at night I could not sleep, usually, I will spend time in front internet until my eyes tired by itself.

Hiya winjay,
First thing I do for a less stressful evening is to walk away from the News Bulletin on the Television and do other things more positive like cook up a Supper instead that is a bit different. Just something really simple cooked a different way can make all the difference in everyone´s mood too.
It´s really not simple to break the habit of sleepless nights for me at least after nine o´clock at night I break the chain of nagging thoughts if I can and just let them go. That is not easy but it does make for a better nights rest and it took me ages to master it. there are a few times when I can´t get off that bad habit of worrying but mostly it has helped me sleep much better without taking anything.
When I see anyone in my Family worrying a lot I just try to change the subject in another way. I usually say silly things and try to make them laugh. Sometimes it works and others not hope it helps.

Many times it happens that full night I couldnt sleep ...on that time I like to divert my mind either by reading some books or by watching tv ...these days mainly by surfing net.
