Are you a hoarder or a minimalist?

I am a minimalist and I often give things away to friends or donate things to charity. I don't like to have too many things, and I only want to keep the things that I really like and the things that I am going to use again. My husband is the opposite kind of person. He keeps everything, and when he hears about people who give their old things away, he is always ready to pick them up. This leads to some arguments every once in a while...
What about you? Are you a minimalist or a hoarder? If you have a partner is (s)he the same kind of person or the opposite kind of person?

Thankfully I'm not a hoader. My mom tends to be one. When she was selling her home back in New York it was a two family home with four floors. I can't begin to tell you how many times we had to fill up the dumpster and how many bags of garbage went out of the house. I think because of this experience which happened almost 9 years ago I give my stuff to charities, have garage sells or just give away things. I don't believe we need so much in this world when it comes to material things. Its unfortunate that alot more people don't realize this. Its not like you can take it with you once you die.

My mother had magazines and tv guides dating back to the 70's. This was now 2001 when cleaning the house out. Can you believe it?

I'm not a hoarder but I'm not a minimalist either...I think I'm somewhere in the middle. I like to hang onto things that have sentimental value to me but I don't have paths to get through my house. I have a few boxes of storage stuff and a closet that I need to clean out but that's it. I do have a few major hoarders in my family but I'm working with them :)

The mix of a hoarder and a minimalist is probably a good solution. I am a minimalist and sometimes I wish that I had kept some of the things that I have given away or thrown away, but I have moved so many times and I couldn't keep all of my things. My husband is a hoarder and he wants to keep almost everything, that leads to some arguments every once in a while...

No I am not a hoarder and hope I never will! I always fear I will become one!I am one who is a sentimelist and sometimes keep thing sI might need something in the future. I am disorganized but I am not a hoarder! I hope I never become one! I fear this because my mom became one. I believe she did because it was her way of coping with my #sshole father! People hoard for all reaons. My mom it was a coping thing.

I am definitely a hoarder. My case is probably not so serious than the case of your husband -- I am not picking up things here and there -- but I don't throw things easily. Except in the bathroom, I have books everywhere in my house and people who don't know me are amazed about that.

Wow, you must have a lot of books. Are they fiction or non-fiction or a combination of both? I also used to have many books, but I have given a lot of them away to my friends or family members or second hand shops. Now I usually borrow books at the library instead of buying them, but if I find a book that I really like, I sometimes buy it so that I can read it again.

I love to keep my old things specially when it was a gift from someone. I love to give things that I bought or buy something and donate it to charity, but I keep my things that was given to me over the years that had past. I guess I'm a hoarder of things that has a sentimental value to me no matter how old it is or has no use to me anymore.

I understand what you mean. I also think that it is easy to give things away if I have bought them myself. If it is a present it is a bit more complicated, because of the sentimental value. I have given away some presents, because I had to move and because I had too many things, but it is definately easier for me to give things away that I have bought.

Interesting discussion here. My grandmother and my fiance's mother have a horrible harding disease, so because of this I am in the middle between minimalist and hoarder. I think there is that line in the middle that is a safe spot. That line is where I enjoy being. I willl NEVER be like either of those woman in the sense that our entire house is just filled with crap beyond crap. I also cannot have a house that has very little things in it either. I like having the option of keeping things in case I need them again, but also understand that there is a draw beyond the keep because you think you will use it again. Well, as noted my fiance is a complete minimalist because he does not want to turn into having a hoarding problem.

i'm a hoarder, but do go on the odd cleaning spree every so often and get rid of a heap of things. makes me feel a bit better as well. big down side to having so much stuff at times is the mess you create if you go looking for something and don't know where to look. i can't wait for the ex to move his stuff out my house, then i will have more room for things.

Yes, it is true, when you have lots of things it is difficult to find the things you are looking for. We often have that problem While I am writing this, my husband is looking for old things online, so I wonder what we are going to pick up next time...

I don't think that i could ever be considered a minimalist. I am one of the world's biggest hoarders of all time. i can't seem to throw anything away. I save everything because I always think i will find a use for it sooner or later. I just can't help myself i guess.

I'm afraid I'll have to admit to being a hoarder although I don't think I'm as bad as my dear old Mum, who sadly, is no longer with us.She had a thing about keeping newspapers and when we tried to throw them out,she would tell us that she hadn't read them yet! The newspaper was usually weeks or even months old!
I do try and have a clear out every now and then and take stuff to the local charity shops.

Well I am a total hoarder and I hate it, because I just have so much stuff shoved away that I know I don't need, but I just hate chucking stuff out. After a while I get to the point where I get really fed up and then bang, I will fill up a stupid amount of bin bags... half to give away to other people, and half will go in the bin. Do you know the worst thing I have are old letters/bills and magazines, it is crazy. I would love to be a minimalist especially in my house with 2 kids running around, but I know it wont happen anytime soon, well at least till the younger one is at school lol

i used to hoard.. i keep a lot of things either for future use or for souvenirs... haha... its like i wanted to recycle a lot of things but then i would forget about it...
anyway, me and my sister used to stay in a single apt... she hated it when i keep buying things.. she hated it, coz i always go shopping on paydays... she doesnt want a lot of things in our apt...
well, now, i have learned to give away my old stuff and throw those things that i wont be needing at all..
my mom is a hoarder too.. my dad gets annoyed seeing the things my mom have.. some of them, she doesnt really use at all, and when my dad would start telling her to give away those things.. they could start a fight... lol

I'm a hoarder more than a minimalist, I don't like to throw my old things away, nor give them to others or donate them. But recently my mind has changed, because each time when I tidy my room, I find a lot of useless old things. So these days I am interested in selling them. If nobody needs them anymore, I'll throw them away.

I am a hoarder aiming to become a minimalist. I had tons of things before I was married, stuff I have treasured for years, and my room was really cluttered. Now, my husband is somebody who is very neat and organized and absolutely hates clutter and mess, so now my new home is more "decent-looking". Of course we still have things hanging around but I've tried to clear some of the mess on a regular basis so I might be on my way to become a minimalist. Let me review that a few years down the road. lol.

I am not a hoarder but do keep a watch on stocks that need to be replenished.I do not wait till the last grain gets over. I feel comfortable when my pantry is full but not to the point I would have to throw away the stuff because it has become stale. This applies to all other items in the house be it towels, bedsheets the works. I have a system where I periodically check to see if there is anything in the house that needs to be discarded specially gadgets that are out of commission.

I admit that I am a bit of a haorder, but I am getiing a little better at throwing things out. I got into the habit of keeping useless things 'just in case' I have stacks of old mobile phones and their chargers that I can't seem to let go of yet! lol.

I would say that I am more of a hoarder than a minimalist. Although I have no problems getting rid of things when I need to. I think I get it from my mother and this summer I'm going to try hard to convince my parents to have a garage sale to get rid of all the junk that they had.
