can you suggest me an anime, fighter planes themed?

Mecha anime? I hardly watch them.. but there's a few good ones like Code Geass and Tengen toppa gurren lagann.

to go completley old school how about patlabor ? bit new something why not gurren laggan its very entertaining even for me im not a big mecha fan

Oh, anime series with dogfights, huh? Sadly there's not a lot of those that I can think of. Well, there's Last Exile but that one has a lot of big battleships. Other then that, the only titles I can think of are Area 88 and Macross. But definitely check out Area 88. It's a really good series.

if you want to see something classic i recommend you robotech. or anything related with the macross saga, the designs are really good and the fights are super, specially now that they added some good cgi in the last presentation of the serie macross frontier. also last exile is a good story that implies planes.
