I just read an article that made me laugh at first but sound interesting after you give it a second thought. It suggests you click "mute" at the control during commercials. It says that TV´s commercials are filled snack ideas. That makes us crave for those kind of foods. How many times you see a soda on TV and get up from the nice, comfy place where you are seated to go and get a glass of it before the show starts? Children are particulary prone to recieve that without hesitating. Besides, they will jump from their chairs quicker than we do. TV eating is a big part of having overweighted children (a problem in the future for them) and less money in your pocket (it´s expensive to fill the needs for snacks children have now).
So, what do you think of trying the idea of TV muting at commercials? I´d be happy just if I don´t have to listen to a particular lady that wants me to buy some of those very expensive gadgets "as seen on TV". I hate her voice!
I´ll be doing it from today (another proyect of mine) How about you?
Take care!

Hi Jo,
June is birthday month in my family. So I have gone out a lot. Besides my mom needs some dental tratment and I´m taking her. And one of these days I´ll have to start doing a lot of comings and goins so the insurance pays for part of my shoulder surgery (I haven´t given them all the papers). Life is not easy.
I also had my own birthday although I did not have a party. The girls came with nice things to eat and my mom invited me for lunch. Ill have a late party next month, after I have my hair dyed. Now I look at least one hundred years old.
HUGS!!!

I have earned my white hair, but nature did not choose the most beautiful white hairs for me. And I have this wonder cousin who has her magic wand and does the change.

That is an interesting theory, and it might work. I have an idea that would work a lot better, though, and be even healthier than muting the commercials. While the commercials are on, get up and exercise. They are annoying anyway, so why not take this opportunity to get some exercise, even if it is just jogging or walking in place or leg lifts or whatever. If you do this during the commercials for even an hour per day, you are not only getting more exercise but also increasing your metabolism at the same time. Plus, it will make you less likely to give in to those tempting commercials, because you will be actively doing something else.

The problem for me, as I was telling dawn, is that I get up and go to the kitchen to do some cleaning up. And temptation is there!. I shouls exersice my shoulder though.

Marguicha - If you exercise your shoulder, then that will be great for your therapy, keep you out of the kitchen and away from temptation, and it will still boost your metabolism. If you choose things that you can do right there in front of the TV, like leg lifts or tummy crunches or something like that, then you can avoid the temptation of both the commercials and the kitchen.
Alice - Yes, I guess that you do need a certain amount of discipline or it will fail. I never really thought about it, but I guess that normally I don't have those kinds of problems because I am not easily swayed by things like that. Don't get me wrong, I do have cravings, but they very rarely have anything to do with a TV commercial - usually they are more determined by the weather or time of the month.

Since I don't have a portable TV, I don't have such problems. Seriously, the cravings that I do have do not have anything to do with commercials. I don't normally get them while I am watching TV ... mostly they are when I am outside playing or exercising. I get hungry or thirsty, and then something comes to mind that I really want to eat or drink. During certain times of the month, however, I would just about kill for chocolate.

Or get up during commercials and go do something else? Or tape your shows and fast forward through the commercials?

I get up sometimes to do something useful, dawn. But as many useful things are done in the kitchen, temptation is always near

Muting isn't enough in our house. Just the graphics are just too appealing. We usually channel-surf during commercials, looking for a channel that isn't showing commercials at the time, even if it's one of those shop-at-home networks. I may end up buying something, but at least I don't eat it...

Fortunatly the gadgets I like that they show on TV are indecently expensive. I got hooked on a steam thingy to iron clothes once. I called and the price amounted to about 20 normal steam irons. End of the story: Thank you but, no, thank you!

...Hi there marguicha, Very interesting. But I guess I have been ahead of the times. I just don't like commercials so I have been muting them for years, sorry to say it has not helped with not gaining weight. But commerecials, most of them are so long, and so overdone that it is just mind boggling, there should be a limit to the time allowed on commercials but that would limit the money coming in so forget that. Children are the targets of many commercials to make their parents buy, buy, buy. Take it easy.

I am very mad at how commercials make parents go beyond their means to buy their children things they don´t need. I have experienced that with my grandchildren and had to talk to the children when they were little that I did not have money to buy toys that would end up being eaten by the dog in 2 days.. Fortunatly they had common sense (with me) and thy accepted that granma was poor.

I prefer news at the computer usually. For me, TV time is just before going to sleep. I have this favorite channel where they have lots of shows where they catch murderers in one hour (minus commercials). Its relaxing and funny. Sometimes I see real life stories at other channels and, if they are lucky, they will catch the bad ones in years.
In the morning, I get inspired with gourmet channels while I clean up my room.
I think the muting of commercials has more to do with young people. I do not take snacks to my room ever. I have the old fashioned idea that you must eat at the dining room table.
Take care

Hi marguicha :)
That sounds an interesting idea and I suppose there could be something in it but I'd be highly delighted if the only thing I had to do to keep my weight down was mute the TV commercials! :)

We can start with this, friend! I invited a friend for diner last night. He lives at a very nice senior home and there´s a nutritionist that has him in a light diet. But he goes out and that´s the end of it LOL. I´ll try the commercial muting, can´t do any harm. Take care!

On the contrary doing online tasks or games could make us thin because we're too busy to eat. LOL. It is not also good to be bringing food and drinks in front of the computer, so. With TV, yes, you will have more chances of becoming fat since all you do is watch and eat at the same time.
