i live in a big city and all the blockbusters and hollywood videos are going out of business.. redbox is EVERYWHERE! now i heard that blockbuster and/or hollywood has their own redbox type machine but i have yet to see one.. i do have to admit it saddens me since i loved being able to go to a store with tons of movies that i could look through and read the backs of unlike redbox which is limited and tells you nothing of the movie.. i recently used redbox for the 1st time and its just not the same!!!
am i the only one sad about the old school video rental places going under? or is your town still full of them?

I agree moon it is nice to be able to go into a video store and look around at all the titles and descriptions. I have only rented from redbox as well once and I like you did not care for it so much. I do like the convience as they are all over and in some cases I don't even have to get out of my car anywhere then I normally would to get since they are appearing in Walmart and places like that here.Alot of Blockbuster and the video stores are closing here as well so I am not renting as much as I used to either. I guess it is a sign of times changing and we either have to live with it or do without.
Thanks for your question.

hI moonlitmagikchild,
Ya, they do seem to be fading out. I don't like it either but like you said RedBox and Netflix and Pay-Per-View are all taking over. Where I live, blockbuster just closed it's doors. We have a locally owned video store who is getting all of blockbusters old customers. It's huge and has been thriving here for years so I hope they make a go of it. If I rent a movie I do go there just to support the business. I really would love to see them succeed.

I don't know what is a redbox...so apparently, we don't have one here or if we do, I am not aware of it. We have movie rental places where one can go and rent out movies. But Cds have also become cheaper and most people I know buy their own movies....I don't see the point because they watch the movie just once and do not see it again...or share it with others....except for a few that the children like. My husband doesn't like the bother of going and checking out movies to rent....and he buys the CDs sometimes...but he's not a movie person and so we don't watch many.

yeah i dont want to waste my money buying movies because usually the ones i think would be good end up being bad! a redbox is a vending machine for movies.. you use your credit card as a membership card and swipe it.. choose your movie from a small list and it pops it out and if you return it by the next night its only a dollar for it.. they are showing up in front of every store here its crazy!

i remember there were video shops which rent VCDs, DVDs, etc. about five years ago. i can say they were earning at that time, since everytime i go there and rent movies, there were always a lot of people doing the same thing like i search and rent. but when piracy becomes a business tolerated by some local government officials, video rental shops were closed. i am not sure if the biggest movie renting store in the city still operates. but if they still in the business, i do not think they earn the same thing they do, back in five years, since buying a CD with 9 to 12 movies only costs a dollar to 2.

Yeah Redbox is also in most stores here to and I live in a small town lol. But it wont take over rental stores because you have to use your credit card which a lot of people dont have. And they dont have a large selection so if there is a new movie chances are you will have to wait a few days just to rent it. I dont think it will ever take over movie rental stores.

its like a vending machine for video rentals. you sign up using a credit card and swipe it at the machine and pick a movie and it pops out. if you return it by the next night its only a dollar for the movie but more if you keep it.. but it has a very small variety of movies to choose from

I can't say it makes me sad because I don't rent movies anymore...I just buy them. I haven't rented in years. But I certainly understand where you're coming from. I feel the same way about books. I've responded to a discussion or two regarding whether or not ebooks will ever replace tangible books. I don't think there's any danger of that but it would certainly bother me if it happened. Like the video stores there is something enjoyable about going to a bookstore and being able to browse through and touch the books before you buy them. I don't keep up with the changing trends in video rental but maybe it will be some time before we see the end of the video store.

yeah i would not like it if it was a bookstore either! i dont think i would ever like a kindle/ebook over the regular book even though it would be saving a tree

Hey moonlit! The same thing is happening here too! Blockbusters
is still around, but just barely! They charge way too much
money to rent DVD's and that is why they are slowing fading away!
There are too many new ways to watch movies now and no one wants
to pay their prices! There is still one store that my bf goes
to where he rents movies! That store is a small store and they
sell CD's, DVD's and some other stuff and they have been in
the same place for years now! They have some kind of special
if you rent movies during the week. I just wish he had better
taste in movies since he likes those stupid horror ones or
the very violent killing kind that I hate! Once in awhile he
brings how something good that just came out!

I love watching movies and I have definitely noticed this growing trend! I used to be a member of Blockbuster and I used to rent my movies from there but they have gone out of business! I guess the new trend is to get your movies online now and so I have become a member of lovefilm.com.
You can rent or buy dvds from them and if renting there is no rush to post the dvd back. I'm on a subscription plan with them and this definitely works for me. It's a shame that this has to happen but I guess it's the kind of time we live in now! New technology coming out all the time and being updated and easier and faster ways to rent or buy movies!
I rent two dvd movies per month on the subscription plan I'm on. If you pay more then you can have an unlimited amount of dvds. I think that this is the future now and it's the only way to go! Andrew

You are not alone our blockbusters and Hollywood videos are disappearing too. We have the redbox which seems to work really good. Its not the same as going to a video store by no means. I think the best is netflix you can look on the computer at your convenience and get movies delivered to your mailbox. Its the best plan out there I think. They also have a new system where you can actually connect it to your Wii if you have that system.

oh cool i do have a wii!! my prob with the through the mail ones is my mailman is an idiot and has more than once given my mail to other people and i get my neighbors mail all the time!! i live in the ghetto so its not like you want to return a lot of peoples mail and you dont know how honest your neighbors are if your stuff is given to them so my luck my videos would go to some one else lol

Strangely, they still survive despite the rampant piracy of new shows and series. I am still a member of one shop and I am very fearful that it will close down one day without my noticing it. Then I will lose all my deposits. I will try to close my account but I heard she never return your money but give you instead some old outdated discs.
Either way, you lose!

Yeah, here too, they are going out of business, and they are trying to find a new way to increase the clients, but always failing... I think that technology changes the world in many ways and the good business of the past, now they are not profitable.

yeah i saw an interview on a singer that had just put out a new cd and it had been years since the last one and she was saying how she made a ton on the last one but now you dont make as much at all because of how people steal it or buy only one or two songs download wise etc.. but then again cheaper is better for the poor folks like me!! lol

I think between RedBox and NetFlix, the Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos are going to be an ancient relic one day soon. The problem is that RedBox charges $1 per night, and Blockbuster is a minimum of $4.50 even though you can keep it for a week. We also have a Blockbuster box (like RedBox) at our local gas station, so I think Blockbuster sees the writing on the wall.
I recently felt like I was forced to join NetFlix. I love Indies and there are a lot of movies from a few years ago I haven't seen. Well, you can't find these in the box. For $9/month (or two Blockbuster movie rentals), I can see many more movies via NetFlix. So what I do is use a combination of both. I still get new releases on occasion from RedBox and use NetFlix the rest of the time. I loved Blockbuster, but they have priced themselves out of the market.

oh i love indies too!! i always liked hollywood video more than blockbuster since at least the ones near me they would have new releases for $3 something for 5 days where at blockbuster the new releases were the same price for like 2 nights and hollywood always had nicer stores.. i dont think they are doing any redbox type thing though so they better get on the ball!!

the last couple of years ive had a hard time finding movies i actually wanted to watch so ive learn to stop buying before i had seen them and if i can afford it to get the movie channels lol.. seemed like every time i would buy before i had seen the movie it was destined to be a horrible movie no matter how great the reviews or people in it was

yeah the stores would have so many you could barely narrow it down where as redbox your lucky if you can find more than one or one even sometimes

We have some but i didn't rent movies often because many times cd's where scratched and didn't work ok and you have to return it soon. Now days i just download everything or go to cinema. But in our country there is still many rentals and i know just for one redbox like machine.

This subject hac crossedmy mind a lot recently. I too miss going to the video store and browsing; it's almost like going to look around in a record store.
These days, like music, everyhing is going digital, micro, automatic, etc. Redbox is convinient, but I do still want to look around in video stores.
