healthy school snack

school is starting 3 days from now, and i am wondering what school snack can i prepare for my 8-year-old son. when he was in grade 1, he used to eat rice and burger patties during their recess. his snack has always been like that for almost 7 months until the school year ends. sometimes i would cheat on him and change the patties to hotdogs or luncheon meats, but when he arrives home, he would brag and say why i changed his meal. i am worried that he is getting too much oil as much as salt and preservatives from these. i am having a hard time convincing him to try sandwiches for snack. fellow moms, do you have any ideas? please share them with me. also, please include easy to prepare breakfast meals. your response is very much appreciated. thanks!

I remember being fat in high school and having to ask my mom to prepare my meals so that I'd be healthier. She did a great job by buying cookbooks and getting me involved in the preparation of my meals. Sandwiches are great and sometimes, instead of using bread, you can use tortilla like for tuna, lettuce and tomato. my mom also like preparing pasta for me and she used to put in eggplants in my lasagna and instead of the usual spaghetti with red sauce, my mom tossed spaghetti in olive oil, then she would add nuts and broccoli and slices of chicken...my classmates loved to share what I had in my brown bag.

that sounds great. i just hope that my son would eat the veggies as he is a bit picky eater. maybe i could substitute the broccoli with finely chopped carrots. what do you think?

yeah, he is into basketball. he is just starting to like it, but he is not enrolled in a basketball camp, just an outdoor basketball where he gets to play with his friends. i am just wondering what else could be done with his patties. he just loves them. maybe i really need to learn how to make homemade burger patties. thanks for your reply!

in my opinion, you should know what food your kid loves except rice and hamburger. You can cook kinds of food for him and let him to choose some food he loves.Next cooking this food instead of the food he eated in the past.

Preparing snacks and lunch for our kids in school is really a problem. Parents have to do this everyday the whole year. One has to be creative and also mindful of the health aspect of the food you are preparing. It is sad to note that kids usually will only appreciate foods that are fried. We have a kid in the house and we hope we can put in some fruits for snacks once in a while. She suggested these herself.

i agree with you, and sometimes it is too tiring to think of what to prepare for them the next day. fruits are great. yeah, maybe i could add fruitcocktail as a dessert. great idea.

Hi there! i am also a mom of 1, and my daughter will go to school this coming tuesday as grade one pupil. Her schedule was from 7am to 3thirty in the afternoon, and all of them will have their lunch at school. Even if its still far from the date of opening of classes, your concern was also my problem because im a working mom and i have to prepare her lunch in the morning already so she already have it till lunch time because no one will be there to bring the lunch for her before 12 noon everyday. What i did was to look for some ideas about healthy recipes in the internet fitted for my daughters age and appetite. Del Monte Kitchenomics was one of the company that offered many recipe ideas, also tips for us mother's to do in order to ensure that our kids will try variety of healthy recipes. You may visit their website so as early as now, we could plan our kid's daily meal that are not just easy to prepare but healthy as well.

I'm not a mom but I suggest that you make burger patty that is vegetables I know there's such thing..and you won't know it's a vegetable for its taste because it tastes just like an ordinary patty..But I really suggest that you explain it to him why he should eat nutritious foods and don't let him rule over you..you should be the one who rules over him
