Throwing out your memories

I think I'm going to have to throw out my bean bag chair. It has a giant gaping hole that I've fixed with duct tape many times. The beads were spilling out again and I know it's life was short. So, today, I think I'm throwing out the bean bag chair. I might try to duct tape it a little bit longer, but it seems like it isn't holding u well. It makes me sad since I've had it for years. I remember one day, my friend pretended to make out with it. Good ol' times. It almost feels like you're throwing out a memory when you dump the item that is associated with the memory, doesn't it?
Have you ever had to throw something out that had a good memory associated with it? Why did you throw it out? What was it? What was the memory tied to it?

Hi Stephanie, Oh I have had to do this many times and yes it is sad butyou do still have the happy memories. Years ago I lost most of my family photos due to a flood whilst in storage and many other items but I have the memories although I was devastated at the time. I try to look at it that they are only material things. Huggles. Ellie :D

Yikes! Typos galore!
Qill = still
fo = go
I think I'm better typing on the computer than the iPod.

Sometimes we have to make hard decisions in life. Let it be leaving a thing, person or place. But thats what life.
In life time comes when we have to take decisions against the saying of our heart. Though I have not been in such troublesome conditions but I know how it feels and hurts.

I'm amazed you haven't gone through it. That's a good thing! Did someone close to you go through it and told you his or he story?
Sadly, life is filled with losses and hard decisions, but we learn to deal with them.

I'm only one year older than you! I hope you never go through it. It' is likely you will though. You'll see when it happens.

It wasn't my item. I tossed a shirt of my husbands that had so many holes it it, there were more holes than shirt. It was a memento from a trip that he took, but there just wasn't even enough left of it to make a good dust rag imho.

Wow! I wouldn't even keep that shirt if it looked like that. You couldn't even use it as a dust rag? Was it hidden in the bottom of his drawer or something? I hope he didn't wear it out!

I am thinking about getting a bean bag chair one day, though we have nowhere to put it. I used to have a bean bag chair as a child, and loved, just loved to sit in it. I think that even though my old chair has it's own memories, the new one will have new memories...

Most likely Kmart. I remember the comfort from when I was a child, and I believe they now make them with Suede on them. Go get a new one, make new memories, maybe your friend will makeout with the new one?

I agree. Bean bag chairs are so comfy! Find room for it! You won't regret getting one!
Yeah, maybe I should just go get a new one after all. I've tried repairing it multiple times. Where are you planning on buying your bean bag chair?

Hi Stephanie, OMG! I have had to throw away so many things that
were falling apart a were pieces that I had around for many years.
My bf finally convinced me to throw away my Exercise Bike that
I had for over 20 years because it was in the way and collecting
dust! I was so upset, but I finally agreed! And then he decided
to "help" me clean out all my closets and cabinets! I don't
even know what I threw out, but it was from living here for
28 years then so who knows! It needed to be done, I just couldn't
get myself to do it and there is still more to go 2 years later!

Wow. 20 years? That's insane. You never gave it away or sold it? You should have tried to sell it! Maybe someone would have bought it from you. I understand. I mean, I don't like clutter that much, but I hate throwing away sentimental items. It's so depressing.

I left it by the "tree" which is where we put the bigger pieces
we throw out and it was there for the whole weekend! No one
even wanted it and it was in perfect condition! So, I had to
see it sitting there and I kept wanting to bring it back in
the house~

I guess it's just wear and tear. Makes me sad to see it go. I love bean bag chairs. they're so comfy. I don't even know where to go buy another one. This one is still in my room. I really should throw it out, I just don't want to.

Yes, the beans are so utterly annoying! I hate picking them up. They just keep spilling out no matter how much duct tape I use.

Its a weird feeling. When you throw such things out. I had the same when i had to dump my first laptop. I am a computer engineer. My life is set with computers. So i think you will understand what kind of feeling i should have gone through. It stopped working completely. First the batteries then the screen. After that i never touched it, its in the store room of my house. Dumped! .. poor me ..

I felt weird dumping my first laptop too. It was a Compaq Presario running Windows 1998. Poor thing. That must have hurt. That's nice that you still have it though.

I would throw anything that is no longer useful even the item had a good memory on me since it would just make a mess on my room. I have no other vacant room where i could put those item to become antiques. Since it already in my memory or in my mind is the best storage for me. I would still remember it. Even the things still useful on me and my mother would not tolerate me. She would throw or burn anything which is no longer useful and just could not control her as she is the queen of the house:)

I hear ya on this one! I have had to do this a lot it seems. I've moved and shuffled stuff around and had to get rid of a lot of stuff to be more mobile. It really is like throwing out memories, but not really. You just don't have the memory sparker any more!

I agree. The memories will always stay, but it just feels like the memory has disappeared when the item disappears. I guess it could be because you've grown attached to it and had it so long, it almost becomes a part of you. How sad.

yes .... to get rid of memories that is inherent in our hearts it was hard. I am approximately two years ago never to lose a girlfriend who is very dear to me, because she left me. It was hard for me to forget these memories with my girlfriend, although now I've got a new girlfriend, but I can not forget my ex-girlfriend for granted. I do not know how to forget the memories with my ex-girlfriend. It's very annoying ...., ..!

Don't let your attachment to your ex-girlfriend get you in trouble with your new girlfriend. I wish you luck with your new relationship. It's hard to get rid of fond memories, isn't it? Time might help you to forget, or at least, to have them not sitting on the surface of your mind.

Hi, StephanieAnnC!
You are really a reminiscent person. I remembered in one of your comment you told me your family have lived in current house for more than twenty years. I moved many times, things were thrown away in each moving, so I don't have many things which stayed with me for a long time. Maybe the only one stired up my feelings was a computer which had accompanied with me for about 4 years. I felt a bit sad when I sold it and bought a new one with higher performance. I cleaned it carefully for it served me so long.

I remember that discussion! Yes, I pride myself on having a good memory. I hope it stays that way until I grow old.
I felt sad when I let my computer go too. My first computer was a Compaq Presario running Windows 1998. It was literally not working anymore and it would have cost more than the computer was worth to fix it. It made me feel bad, but my memory did not leave when the item left.

I thrown alot of stuff that has meanings with it (like pillows, clothes, letters, stuff toys and alot more)...its just that people have to move on and not just hold the memories besides memories will still remain as memories right?but happy memories should be kept and bad memories should be thrown away.

I agree. The memories are not only tied to the item, they're tied to your brain. It's hard to get rid of memories though. I mean, you want to get rid of the bad memories, but I think it's the good memories that usually go first. How sad.

Yes, that happened to me too, somethings have many memories, but we must to throw them out. For me it was hard to throw or to give things of my childhood, and It was sad, all the memories that they had, when I was a child... Anyway, I had to do that, now I'm older, and I won't play those children's games... :(

Yes, childhood things are the hardest to throw out. But, when they get worn out and don't work anymore, you need to. It's sad to see them go though because they mean so much. But, then again, the memories will stay even if the item disappears.
