Robert Green's blunder: Is it because of "Jabulani"?

Did you watch the soccer match betwen England vs USA? In that match, England goalkeeper, Robert Green, made a blunder. He couldn't catch the ball cleanly when Clint Dempsey fired the easiest shot. As a result, the ball went into his net. People start to think that it is because of Jabulani, the official ball in this tournament. Some players say that the ball is too light and perfectly round like beach ball. So, do you share the same opinion?

England have given away vital points because of an appalling piece of goal keeping.Unfortunately Capello has a difficult situation as David James is not in great form either and Hart is inexperienced.Fortunately England have a relatively easy group and should recover in their next two matches.

I agree with you, abhikmjmdr, Hopefully, Robert Green and the rest of the team will play better in the next matches.

I don't feel that way. That was pure Green's mistake in catching the ball. He does not focus on catching the ball, when the ball was spinning towards the goal, he does not quickly move to catch the ball. Sometimes the goalkeeper made a mistake in catching the ball, some goalkeeper can quickly respond to throw the ball out while some do not.

Actually, it reminds me of Scott Carlson's blunder when England met Croatia in European Qualifying Match at Wembley. At that time, he let the ball bounch in front of him. So, both concentration and great reaction are required.

echofrommadiun, I don't think we can blame the ball for the goalie's blunder here. It is clear that the goalkeeper was being careless for not getting his body down and completely behind the ball. Anyway, Green along with other England goalkeepers in the past are just human and like the rest will commit mistakes at one time or another. Let's hope that this lesson is a blessing in disguise for I hate to see this happening during crucial matches. Have a nice day.

Okay so Rob Green made a goal keeping error plain and simple, he never got his body behind the ball. But then watching various other games Green is by no means alone as there have been some worse howlers already and not just from goalkeepers. Although it always looks worse when it's a goalie who makes a mistake. As for the actual ball well I do think it's making a difference as players seem to be struggling to control it when taking free kicks and so on, be it down to being lighter or more spherical.

There's an old saying that 'A bad workman will always blame his tools,' and that's what this is all about. The goalkeeper made an error that even a schoolboy player would not have made, and the pundits try to gloss it over and justify the obscene salaries these players earn from their mediocrity by blaming the ball. No way. That wasn't even dangerous - it was a textbook shot that the keeper should have had covered all the way. He didn't - end of.

I think that it was down to bad goalkeeping. No matter what shape the ball was, even if it was oval the goalkeeper still should have kept that shot out of the net.

I just think it was a poor poor piece of goalkeeping and nothing to do with the swerve on the Jabulani ball. If anything I am seeing that free kicks seem to be very ineffective as strikers are finding it difficult to hit the target with this ball. As far as Green is concerned, it was a school boyish mistake, in fact he did not even cover the ball with his body. I think he also looked nervous for most of the match and it was only because the defense did not allow US too many shots at Green that England managed to get away with a 1-1 draw. I think James or Hart would be in for the next match. I think this is one grey area for England, because none of the English Goalkeepers play in the more competitive tournaments such as Champions League or even Europa League. Compare that with other top teams, Spain, Italy and Brazil and you know the answer why England cannot go all the way in this tournament. Cheers! Ram

Ya i see the match ,but I dont think it was due to the ball,it was the defect of Green. An international golekeeper should not miss ball like this. due to his blunder england didnt won the match. Iam very sad on it .

Not at all. Players will justify everything and blame the ball. They did that in Germany as well. Green messed up and took his eye off the ball, end of the story. My husband has played with the ball and used to play semi professional soccer and his opinion is the ball is fine. I say look at his gloves, they are took thick and restrict his hand motions.

It was only a slight contributing factor ... the keeper was behind the ball but perhaps was too tense to absorb the force and keep it in front of him ... more a case of poor form, lack of concentration and simply making a blunder.
