Okay, I need some help from those computer techies here. I have a serious question about proxy server on the browsers like Firefox, and Internet Explorer. There is an instruction you can manually change the HTTP address (which is the proxy server address), and port number. I guess you can get those anonymous IP (or proxy server) address from online list. Simply copy one of those address to the HTTP address, and enter the port number, you can hide your IP to surf the web without revealing your true IP address. Somehow, I followed that instruction, but it just won't work. I couldn't get access to any website by using other proxy address. Why?

Hi,
If you really want to do your surfing in a disguised mode then use http://technolocus.blogspot.com/2010/05/freeware-review-surfproxy.html surfproxy. First reverse the changes you made in your browser. There is a potential address resolution conflict. You really don't need to do that. Use surf proxy or similar software instead. Thanks
God bless you

Would that software affect my pc operation? Once I used the advice of mylot user, and download this software. I couldn't get my connection working. I have to deleted everything, and reinstall my browser to make it work again.

You browse in that software, which means it is totally unrelated to any of the browsers currently installed in your PC. In case you have to uninstall your internet explorer, all the bookmarked pages are stored in
C:\Documents and Settings\Users\Favorites
You may back them up before doing anything with your browser. A proxy software shouldn't affect the normal operation of your PC

For me the administrator is blocking surfproxy. I also tried with Wingate and that didn't help much either....any other sites in your mind?

All proxies are not anonymous, and some corporate or ISP proxies are not intended to be used by all internet users. It is possible that the proxy address you want to use is not available anymore. To be sure to surf with a legitimate and allowed proxy, it is better to use a web proxy : a list updated every ten minutes is available at http://proxy.org
If you want to be more anonymous chose a ssl proxy, and if you want a real anonymity online, you can install Tor on your computer : http://www.torproject.org/
When I am connecting internet with wi-fi from a free connection in a coffee shop or a supermarket, I don't use a proxy but a Virtual Private Network : I think it is more secure.

Hi!
That's because the proxy you're using is not working now. proxies are very difficult to find and very unsteady, they can be well this second and broken just next second.
So you'd better verify them before using, you can use software like Proxy Hunter to verify proxies automatically.
