Do you own or rent the house/apartment where you live?

Australia

I know that there are alot of people out there that own the place where they live but more & more people these days are renting & paying off someone else's mortgage. It can be hard to save up for a deposit on a house depending on your situation but that's another discussion...I just want to know if you rent or own where you live.

Our House - Still under construction
We have a house but its far located in the Farm, so we rent an apartment in Gapan City so that my kids (still young 10-12-14 yrs.old) would not have much trouble going to school. We have also begun constructing our new house, under Pab-Ibig Fund, but it wont be finished until September.

I was born in the house where i am living at present. It is a rented apartment and quite spacious.I pay a ridiculous rent of just 7 dollars per month. Our building is 70 years old but in a good condition. However there are plans to redevelop it and build a highrise apartment building in which case i will become the owner but will have to pay higher taxes. It is still a long way off and till then i am enjoying life in my cozy house.

This is the second home that I have owned and its up on the block for sell. I sold a house in New York about 3 years ago. Moved to New Mexico and brought another house but now planning to move to Puerto Rico once this house is sold where I will once again be living in a home, thankfully. I hope it happens soon.

My case is something wonderful - I spent around 30 years in a rented house from my birth and after saving a lot constructed my own house and enjoyed for about 8 years and a storm of bad luck entered in the house as a dispute took place between brothers and the house was sold. So now again entered a rented house.

I'm sorry to hear that you had to sell the house. Hopefully one day you can buy or build again.

Our family has three houses, all of them are own by ourselves. Oh, maybe that's not exact, according to law in my country, what we own is only 70 years using right. I think if possible, it's better to own than to rent. You must pay for renting every month. that's terrible. But except someone who is lucky enough to rent only with $7 per month.

I don'tunserstand the laws in your country...what if everyone in your houses lives longer than the 70 years?

Hopefully the government will gove an explanation :)

I can't answer your question because I'm only 23 now and my house is only 7 years old. I don't understand the law, too. because it havn't been used. I havn't seen any private house which is over 70 years now. You know, my country is only 61 years old. Maybe the goverment will give a explanation when they want to use it.

We are renting a duplex right now. The rent is super cheap and we are saving for a bigger down payment for a house.

I actually rent the apartment that I'm currently living in. As I'm a student, I don't really have much of a choice. But, for the time being, I'm alright with this living arrangement. Eventually, my husband and I hope to have a home of our own. And while we're working towards that, we're also trying to save some money for future goals, and things like that.

Being a student is hard on the finances - I was a uni student once too. I hope when you do eventually find a house to buy, it's the house of your dreams for a decent price.

I'm living with my parents who one this house. LOL. I know I'm already in my 20s and I'm supposed to be living on my own but my dad will surely kill me for that decision. LOL. Knowing him, he'll just allow me to move out when I get married. I find it sweet but I might consider moving out someday really soon.

I rented for about 20 years. Finally I moved from the big city to a small town and bought a little place of my own I would have never been able to afford a place in the city.

Everything is expensive in the big cities huh?? I have lived in small towns & it's always a great atmosphere...you can walk down the street & the locals say hello even if they don't know you Congrats on buying a house.

A lot of big ticket items are more expensive. A lot of things are cheaper to. In the city I might have been able to buy a 1 room apartment in a bad neighborhood. It would be a small room. Here I have 3 rooms. That's a 2 bedroom house to you non city people. But food and clothing costs more here. A lot more. I can go into a big city to go clothes shopping. That's no big deal. I love shopping when I'm out of town. When I was pricing lap tops I found the price difference to be a little more than round trip bus fare to the next town. When I buy one, it's not worth going out of town for it. Still all in all the cheap housing makes life so nice.

I used to rent before. The deposit was pretty high. It's two months rent plus a couple of hundreds more for bills deposit. But it's pretty normal for that area so I didn't object. Right now I am living with my mom so renting is definitely out of the question. But I do plan to own my own house. It's hard to buy one now my current financial situation is not so good. Plus I don't have a permanent job yet.

The good thing about living with your mom is that you can save for a house so when you're ready & have a permanent job, you can apply for a bank loan :)

We own our house (well the bank does) that we live in. We bought it in 2001 just as the prices started to go through the roof. It was worth double what we paid for it in the first year. It is now valued at over three times the amount that we paid for it. But we have borrowed a lot of that equity over the years to improve the house, buy a new car and to set up our business so our mortgage is nearly 3 times what it was when we first bought the house. At the moment we are planning on selling to get out of our street as we no longer like it here and we are going to rent for a year. We can rent a bigger house with more room for our business for $1000 less per month than we are currently paying.

My gosh!! rent being cheaper!! I can understand that repayments are usually more but at least it's going towards you're own house...I hope you're able to sell your house at a good price...Are you gonna stay on the Coast?

Our repayments are interest only. In the 9 years that we have been in the house, we have not paid off the loan at all. In fact, our loan amount has more than doubled! But at least we have two good reliable cars now and a business plus the fact that our home has also more than doubled in price. Our thoughts are that we can invest the money into the business and elsewhere for a year or so and then step back into the housing market at a higher level in a better area. One step back to take two steps forward if you like!

Yes we are renting our house and its been 25 years, yes 25 years of renting a house and never had the chance to have our own house well we have a 7800 square meter lot in our province but its really hard to get a good buyer for it. And also my family don't want to live in our province because its hard to get a good job with high salary there so they decided to live here in makati and started to rent a house. Paying a monthly bill in rent house rent is really a big burden to us plus the electricity and other monthly bill. I hope this new government in our country will create a rent to own houses, that would be more helpful for all the people.

Nowadays, more and more people are renting for their career or studies. On my part, I used to live in my own home which is a family house in the province. Since I have to study and work in the city, I needed to rent an apartment. Until now, I am living independently and continue renting because I know this will not be permanent. I still have a home or house where i can go and return during vacation and holidays. People tend to rent accessible to their work place because it is more practical than traveling back and forth to their hometowns or provinces. More and more people works in the metro because it is where the money is, that is why they need to find a place accessible to their work place to save more.

I rent. I've been renting the same house for the past 14+ years now. My husband and I get a pretty good deal on it though, so I can't complain much, even if there are some downsides to it, like paying for our own appliances and whatnot. But it beats having to pay a mortgage. Housing, even renting, is so expensive around here. Good thing we have such a deal, otherwise we'd never be able to afford a house like this. Happy mylotting!

You are lucky getting a good deal on your house...the house I rent...I guess you can say it's a good deal as it's cheap for my area & being 2 streets from the beach but I guess it's because my house is old & was termite infested so I have a termite man come every 4-6 months to make sure they haven't come back. I basically want to live here till I can buy unless the owner wants it back as he's holding onto this house hor his retirement.

We have been renting since I was born (I am 18 now). And the truth is, we have moved from place to place for about ten times due to different circumstances. The last time we had to move out was because of the flood--we had to move to a higher area where it isn't likely to flood when it rains. It's easy for us to transfer because we don't own the houses we have lived in.

This is true..it canbe easier to move when you rent but at the same time, it can be hard because you have to wait for the lease to finish unless you can find someone to take over.

That's 1 upside, you're getting help to pay off the mortgage without having to get into housemate tiffs about the housework lol. I hope it's working out for you as I think you have a great deal there :)
