If a Baby is Born Under Water........

If a human baby is born under water with no air and stays under water with no air for the rest of it's life, will it's lungs never adjust to air, will the baby become an amphibious human for the rest of its life? Or will it drown? I heard of people being able to breathe water for only short periods of time, but their lungs are already adjusted to air. But since a baby's lungs after being born still have fluid in them, would it be possible for their lungs be able to adapt to water instead of air just so long as they breathe water as they are being born?

The latest technology says that many women select the way to born baby under water. But the key technology is so hard that few hospitals know. You said the baby can adapt to water instead of air,it is impossible.Baby in belly of women's breath with oxygen, the oxygen in the water is not enough for the baby.

I should rephrase my question. I incorrectly said no air. But water has oxygen. Women give birth underwater all the time, so its not impossible, but would they be able to live underwater for long periods of time, and would it cause any changes to their body?

No chance! Babies can be born under water but only for that reason, they cannot live under water. Even if it is possible, how can he relate with other humans? He will not be able to come out of water and live on the surface like us. Life will be total waste for him then.

WOW,I have to say your brain are filled with odd and massive creative imagination! A baby born under water?! How he takes breath? Can he swim ? Whatever,if this circumstance comes true, maybe the bady will become the next talented Michael Phelps! :p

Babies live in fluid filled sacks inside the mother's womb, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to consider that a baby could live and breath underwater. Pregnant women give birth to babies in water, and the baby swims around able to breath underwater on its own, but no one has ever kept the baby underwater.

no this is impossible unless a gametic mutation has happened causing the lungs to be able to take oxygen from water. But that is so near impossible it's not funny. The more possible way of this happening would be if environmental conditions changed and the human race again like years ago started to follow natural selection and act like animals so that we gradually converged towards a species that did have a form of gills. This sort of evolution is called convergent evolution if I'm right where different species become more a like due to occupying the same niche. In this case it may be the fact that we need to breathe underwater. I've kind of already answered your question but I love biology so I'm kind taking out all misconception for you :). To relate back to your first question. It is impossible unless a lot of fortunate events over millions of years occured to make a baby that would breathe underwater but by that stage it wouldn't have to be born specifically underwater just to breathe in it. Or maybe we would as our lungs may have become vestigial organs... I could go on for hours. I hope I answered your question.

To say its impossible is to say genetic mutation through adaptation of changing environments is impossible, and that has been proven wrong. There are many different types of evolution. One causes change over a long span of time to improve a species ability to survive in an environment, and the other causes quick change for survival with sudden changes.

Hmm I always wondered the same thing. It would be pretty cool to have a race of little fish people.

Imagine all that poop floating around in the water. Probably the other fish would grow bigger just to handle it.

I don't think it's possible. Human body needs oxygen in order to function properly and I don't think that baby's lungs are adjusted to extract oxygen from water. However, I am not sure about that, but at least I haven't heard of any cases of getting adjusted to water. I strongly recommend you to not undertake such experiments in future!

lol, that's the sort of ponderment that I would usually have :)
No, the baby wouldnt be able to survive forever without oxygen underwater. It got oxygen from the placenta in the womb so that is why it is able to survive in the uterus, but once in the water, it's just taking in H2O and not actual oxygen and the lungs cannot deal with that alone.

They can though, its done everyday, but I'm not sure how long they can stay in there. I've seen videos of babies born underwater and swimming around for a long time, but never a full day.

No, I don't think that's possible. A baby being born underwater under certain circumstances. Baby survive in womb due to umbilical cord that attach to their mother. Of course the result would differ if the baby were genetically change and born with gills, not lungs.

What? I don't think that's possible. A baby is human. It does not have gills and his body works like a human, so I think it is going to drown. I don't even know if it is possible for a woman to give birth under water. She's going to drown before the baby comes out.

It is possible. Many women have given birth underwater.

Humans are not designed to live underwater and their lungs cannot filter out water so I conclude that you cannot live underwater. If you could though, that would be pretty cool.

alot of animals are designed for the environments they end up in, but the change to fit their environments. its a survival feature found in all species.

That is a different type of question though. This is more about natural evolution, not man made surgery.

If a baby is born underwater he might stay for a short period of time but he will definitely die if leave there for many hours. He needs to breath and when you are in the water it's hard to breath. I used to swim in the ocean since our house is near the sea. We would always have a contest with my friend of who can breath or stay long under water and some of my friends can stay ten minuets or five minutes but that's all there is to it.
If things will suddenly change like some catastrophe will occur and the world is suddenly filled with water. Many people will surely die and I think if someone will survive then he will be the first human fish to adopt to the water world.
