this morning i rushed my 11 month old baby to the hospital due to a high fever. my son have no cold or cough, the doctor even checked his throat in case he is suffering from throat infection. but she found nothing. she checked my son's genital and announced it is UTI. she prescribed an antibiotic but did not made any laboratory test. i made my research but all symptoms that should show, like different color of urine, foul smell, pain while urinating... doesn't show in my baby. I am thinking of getting a different doctor.

Your baby has to be brought to the doctor anytime she feels bad because they are more complicated than adults. Babies should be examined. If you have doubts, you could ask the doctor to have your child undergo laboratories. It is your right. Awsk explanations for the management because everything should be explained well to you. You could ask them also if you has questions.

Well I am not a Dr... but from experience I can't understand why they would say it was a UTI if they had not tested it, everytime I have had one and known I have, I have always had to give a sample for it to be tested before a diagnosis is made, surely that would be standard practise, and it's quite worrying with a child who cannot tell you whats wrong. I would get a 2nd opinion just to make sure, and if the same thing is said again then I would have to ask how they could know without testing... good luck and I hope your baby is well soon

Hi. If in doubt go ahead and have another check up for your baby. The doctor should have done a urine test before concluding it was uti.

You need to have another physician. The Doctor cannot diagnose any infection if he doesn't conduct a laboratory test.

I am not a doctor but UTI would hardly be on a baby of 11 months. UTI leads to kidney problem like kidney stones, and signs like blurred yellowish urine with foul smell and bubbly, and pain while urinating caused by the blocking of stone in the ureter. And this you will get from foods high in sodium and sugar that when settles down in the system becomes crystalline-like stones.
If the doctor diagnosed to have UTI, it might be because of the milk with high calcium content - this means he might have calcium stones in his system. Perhaps he might need to be subjected to ultrasound, to be sure.
This is just my opinion and not a professional advise.

I would have thought that without testing his water it would really be pretty difficult to diagnose a urinary tract infection.
The symptoms are
• fever
• vomiting
• tiredness
• irritability
• not feeding well
• not gaining weight properly
• jaundice
and your son has the fever, has he any of the other symptoms
It is difficult to tell with a baby as he can't tell you if he has pain when passing urine or needs to pass urine frequently.
You would normally expect unpleasant smelling urine or even blood in it.
However for many babies the only symptom they get is a fever, so antibiotics are really the best answer , a fever means your child has SOME infection so whatever it is these ill clear it up.
Do keep an eye on him and if he gets worse take him back.

Well, without a lab results, is really unfit to diagnose such. It is improper as well to diagnose UTI without testing first. My best advise is to ask another Physician to test go to a pediatrics doctor and not some doctor in the E.R.. Is your child male or female?
