How can I get dog urine out of a pretty large area of carpet? My dog refuses to use her pee pad and only uses fresh newspaper, so when I forget to change it she pees on the carpet. She has done this many times. Thankfully she is only a toy yorkie so each area isn't too big.

I have this problem too. I tried laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent - nothing really works. The best results I get is when I rent a rug doctor machine. My home machine is ok for little stuff but the big machine has great suction and works best.
I am thinking of getting potty patch from bed, bath, and beyond. Have you heard about this before? It is a tray with artificial grass and it collects the urine at the bottom and you drain it out.

I would suggest trying the different kinds of bacteria-based cleaners that you can find at the pet store(if you have one where you live). They are made for the problem you mentioned. They will probably work better than any of the household cleaners that are mentioned. The problem with getting rid of such stains and especially the smells is because of the ammonia in pet urine that is left behind even after the mess is cleaned up. I think there is even a hormone or maybe it's a pheromone that is left behind as well and that is how dogs tell where their "bathroom" area is. That is why they continue to go in the same spot over and over. Until you get rid of that you can't really solve the problem. That's my understanding of it anyway.
