When you go to bookstores, what particular kinds of books you usually look for?

When I am in a bookstore, I always look for DIY and home improvement instructional books. It particularly interest me to know how things were done and how tos in refurbishing or designing the home. Few years back, I used to buy fiction novels but lately, I couldn't find time to read that long so I prefer reading short stories whenever I can. Horror or suspense thriller books never caught my interest ever since. What about you?

I loved Enid Blyton's books as a kid too - the Magic Faraway Tree and Enchanted Wood, Naughty Amelia Jane, the Naughtiest Schoolgirl, I had about 80 Enid Blyton books in my collection.

Hi Amelly and Karen1969, I am not sure I know Enid Blyton but it sure sounds good reading materials. I hope we have them here. Amelly, we share the same feeling about a bookstore. It's like I am in cloud 9 seeing all wonderful printed materials. Whenever we go to mass on Sundays, we go straight to our local bookstore right after. I can't explain the feeling of walking along aisles of books. I just love it!

I usually look at new books by my favorite authors, and if I can't find that, I just look around to see if something catches my eye. I also read book reviews before than so I am a bit prepared when I go, it helps me get the books that I really want to read when I actually get there.

I do the same thin puccagirl~ I have a few favorite authors that I "stick with" like now! I am reading a Harlen Coban book, "Hold Tight" and it is a little over 400 pages and I can't put it down! So, I'm ordering another 3 more by him! I read what they are about first and the review and buy them at Overstock.com!

Hello! Sometimes very good authors really make us feel connected with them when we read their works. It somehow gives us the feeling that we can relate to their protagonists as the author unveils the character in his novel or book. Like you I also try to find books from the same author if I find his previous works much to my liking. Where do you get most of the reviews that give the best idea about a book other than internet sites? Do you belong to a book club? Hacve a nice day!

I tend to look for mystery books. I like other genres, too, but I seem to mostly enjoy reading mysteries and usually they are the only books I buy. I tend to get the other genres from the library or my book rental service.

Hi antarcticpostcards, You know as I've said again and again, I hate reading books that would jolt my emotions. I would rather read for entertainment and relaxation but it's always good to read romance novels with a lot of mysteries. I don't actually go for book rental service because I have this personality who falls in love with a book that it's hard for me to part with it. I have a particular penchant in buying books for keeps but I could share the titles if I believe it's worth the promotion. :) happy mylotting!

Hi, you know I am afraid to read a book that might scare my wits out. My heart is not trained to race as such! hahaha. Maybe if one day I'd be convinced to read one, I will ask first how the story went before I'll ever proceed so that I have a clue when to get my heart ready for the blood raging heart pounding part. This is also one reason I don't watch suspense thriller and horror movies. Am I kind of boring?

It's been many years since I went through a bookstore. Mostly because I buy my books used from garage sales. Or when the library gets rid of their old books, I tend to go up there and look around. However, with that in mind, there are a certain types of books that I look out for when I do this. Of course, if I am interested by it, I read it. I tend to read a lot of historical fiction books. I'm a big fan of looking at history and it is interesting to see certain perspectives into elements that might happen. Also fantasy and action tends to be among the books. I also look for trade paperbacks of comic books. However, there are more books. As I mentioned, if the books are interesting looking, I will read it.

Hello megamatt, I would love to read those historical fiction books too. It must be a good adventure for the soul reading stuff like that. I haven't as yet read any from that genre. Would you recommend any particular book that is as interestingly good and mesmerizing without a hint of violence and tragedies. I hate sad and tragic endings. Thanks! A good day to you friend!

Hi ada8may21, cooking is also one interest that I share with you. I love cooking and I find most of my recipes from the internet. I also buy cook books but I don't usually follow them to the letter. I improvise mostly and experiment every now and then. One good site that I go for cooking tips and new recipes is www.allrecipes.com, and for baking is the www.preparedpantry.com. You'll love the tips you'll get from them. Enjoy!

Being a Zen practitioner, most of the books I read are Zen books because I guess Zen is a way of life for me and I enjoy reading accounts of how other Zen practitioners deal with their discipline. _Derek

I guess I like the type of books that never caught your attention Horror and suspense is my favorite genre and it's what got me interested in reading books in the first place. When I am at the bookstore, I always go to the horror or the mystery section to see if there is a good new mystery or ghost story. I could spend the whole day reading about detectives or the supernatural. Maybe that qualifies me as a nerd.

Wow animegirl334, that's something! My elder daughter also loves to read suspense thrillers and she is a fan of J.K. Rowling but I haven't had any idea if she reads horror books. Those genres are quite hard to digest, it easily makes my heart skip a beat. You must be an adventurous person. Good day to you!

I ususally don't just walk into a bookstore unless I know what I'm buying or looking for before I buy it. I always go to this used book store about a half hour drive away from me. The owner sells the books and whenever we're finished reading them we can bring them back and exchange them for other books so it's sort of like a library at his store. He won't refund you the full price you've paid for the books but you do get some back. Take care

that is really such a very good idea! wish had one near me!

Hi Nixxi76, maybe your style is more practical because I realize that whenever I go to a bookstore, I don't just buy a book, I almost always buy writing supplies, notebooks, papers, ballpens and pencils. Funny but I must admit that I am a pencil collector.

Hey Bluebelleangel! I love to read and I started to read seriously last Summer! I don't know how many books I read but it was at least 6 books and I have read about another 6 this Winter! I have found books in the $1 store that were hardcover books, didn't know the authors, but figured I couldn't go wrong for a $1 and it turned out the books were incredibly good! And I got a few at a Staples store because my friend is a Manager and gave me some coupons so I got about 6 more there, they were $10 for 2, and with the coupons they cost me nothing!lol I love mysteries! I recommend anything by Harlen Coban, he is an excellent writer! But, I read all kinds of books. I have read humorous books to books about the afterlife!

Hi Yugasini, you must be very busy. Lately I buy books that are self help or DIY and I don't buy much of the novels unless I have an extra budget for that, anyway I'm not that sure that I could read the book immediately. I also postpone buying sometimes unless the books are hard to find ones.

I enjoy self help and books about the paranormal. Anything by Stephen King will have my attention. I like horror, suspense and crime novels. I do like love stories as long as they are contemporary ones. I love to read so I am generally happy to take a look at almost anything.

Hello Paula, the one genre I can't get myself to read is that which story is based on suspense and tragedies so I shy away from those racks in a bookstore.

I usually look in the biography and autobiography section, as I enjoy reading those kinds of books. Then I will check out the film and TV section, as I am interested in film stars and people like Alfred Hitchcock. After that, I will check out the bestseller list and the fiction - either by authors I like or by genre, depending what I fancy reading.

It's nice to know the true accounts of famous people's lives. I particularly love reading the lives of Monarchs but the encyclopedias don't offer that much information about them.

Hi Bluebelleangel, When I go to bookstores, I usually look for some books about philosophy and psycology. I do not need textbooks but just some short chapters, like analyzing of stories or personalities, behaviour and so on, to explain certain kind of phenomenon, ideas or thoughts. Happy Tuesday! agonyaunt69 (5:34pm 15 Jun 2010, Hong Kong time)

Hello Agonyaunt69, I don't ever remember having sought out books from that category in bookstores, maybe because sometimes these philosophical thoughts confuse my principles at some aspects. There's really nothing wrong about those subjects. I don't know or maybe I really did not enjoy Philisophy back in college or maybe my professor was not that interesting in the way she actually taught the subject. I like Psychology but I'd rather read books that could entertain me. Good day to you too and happy mylotting!

I go for acting books. Be it plays or books aboit acting. I have wanted to be an actor for a long time now and a lot of my energy is focused on getting there! It's a tough profession, so any advice from books or even better, people, that I can get is just so valuable. Other than that I don't read a lot. I like feminist literature though and autobiographies.

I usually look for books from Oprah's book club selection or any novel that I find interesting and if it's a new york's bestseller it will really get my attention. Now what I'm reading is "Where the heart is" by Billie Letts. The Novalee Nation who's unlucky, at 17 years old, she is preganant, and finds her self stranded at an Oklahoma Wal-mart after her mean-spirited Napoleonic jerk of a boyfriend left her there on their way to California. But Novalee still finds herself lucky to be in the right town where she will discover that there are still people who will love her and her soon to be baby.

I hope I could have the time to read long novels such as those but as I don't get enough time to read and I am now homeschooling my daughter, I prefer short stories instead. Maybe I could do that in the future when she returns to traditional schooling. Enjoy your day!
