I am a 46 year woman who was just diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Any hints for me, I am totally at a loss of what to do, where to get started and so on. Help me please, so I can try to handle this.

Hello rhodak. I am also a type 2 diabetic.
You need to talk to a dietician. However, you can find tons of information on what to do on the internet.
You need to get a glucose monitor, where you can test your blood sugar levels at least once a day. Your doctor may be able to supply you with one, and if you have insurance they will pay for it for you. You can even get free ones if you search the net for one. The test strips are kinda expensive, but most insurances cover them. In fact, you can buy a monitor at Walmart (their brand) for $9.00.
Most people who develope type 2 are overweight. Cut back on unheathy foods, and eliminate most sugar from your diet. Get used to sugar free soda, use artificial sweetener in coffee, on cereal, and so on.
If you are on oral medication, make sure you take it...preferably at the same times each day.
Contrary to popular beliefs, type 2 does not become type 1. Type 1 is juvinile diabetes. You may, and probably will eventually end up taking insulin, then it is called insulin dependant type 2.
If you watch your diet, maybe lose some weight, and maintain regular visits with your doctor, you can live a very normal life and minimize the complications possible from diabetes. Exercise is also important. That's a problem for me, because I can't stand for very long or walk very far due to my disability.
Please, search the net, cut down on sugar, monitor you blood sugar, exercise, and listen to your doctor...and you will be ok
It does not ever go away, but you can control it and live a happy, normal life.
