I have been wondering this for a long time, is writing out of style? I know I do not even try to write journals anymore but I have a handful in my ipod and the internet, and mylot even tho is a forum could be considered a form of journaling for some of us. I feel that letter writing is almost out with the electronic mail and other things like texting and instant messaging, so here are my questions: DO you think that writing on paper with a pen or pencil is becoming outdated? Are letters part of the past? Or it is something we should revive in our lives?

I don't think that writing can ever go out of style. With the advances or modern technology, we just have more ways to express our views. Writing is a gift of the soul. It is a way to share the world with others.

I don't remember when was the last time I hvae used a pen and paper to write something. I think the last letter I wrote was way back in year 2000. It is getting out of style thse days, besides it is erratic also, I mean if you do mistake then you will have to start doing it again, isn't it? That is why PC's are the one which is popular other than pen and paper!

I feel better writing stuff down on paper, but because my writing is terrible and I have a compulsion to have things as neat and organised as possible I overall prefer to type it. I tend to write scribbles and little notes down on paper, then transcribe and enlarge them in some word processors (OpenOffice is my first choice). It's not outdated, especially for letter writing. Even as we speak I'm writing a letter to a friend who's going to be away for 4 months. It adds a personal touch you can't get in emails.

I am glad to hear that we all have something to write down on paper with pen or pencil, I want to do more so, I will start by sending a couple of friends letters or cards, I am also have a notebook with bible notes and it will not be so hard to start my own journal in a notebook either.

There are still people who write journals and stuff, but honestly I believe that yes, writing is getting outdated now that the internet has gotten so popular. You can reach someone within minutes, where letters could take a few days to deliver. I write letters still sometimes, but it's only to my friend that I talk to every day over the internet when we want to have something of eachother to see.

I think letter writing is, for most people these days, a forgotten art. For many young people it may even be something foreign as they have never done it. It is sad though because I know that when a person receives a letter in the mail, real postal mail, they seem elated Emails are nice but not quite the same as ripping open an envelope to find that someone cared enough to sit down and write a personal letter As for journals, I fear they are gone with the wind. Too easy to sit at a keyboard and type your thoughts than to sit down with pen and paper

Look at my Facebook account. I have all four of the boys and I have their children and stepchildren on my friends list too. Just seems easier these days to keep an eye on them that way. I'm sure that if you asked my sons they would all agree that the Devil will be throwing snowballs the day I actually sit down a write any of them a genuine letter

So truth I enjoy getting letters from my Sunday teacher but she won't give me her address lol I woner why I am not sure how many young people might vet letters from their grandparents and if all try to keep up with their grandmids by facebbok twitter or myspace I believe I have seen mrs grandparents in facebook and even in livejournal once in a while you see a granoarent or parent openning an account just to stay in touch.

I was thinking of grandparents in general how many would rather write that to keep in touch by all means but if the shoe fits lol anyways I am just kidding and I do understand the reason of facebook and other places like it and it is fast and most people who like networking would keep in touch with their loved ones that wY I have enough friends who do not even like to text and it is not just Maris.

Hey Shelly! I think that it is so unfortunate that letter writing is becoming a thing of the past. I still will "write" letters sometimes, like to my Mom, because she doesn't have a computer, but I must admit that I do type them! My handwriting was always awful so for me it is great that I don't have to write anymore!lol I can't even read my own handwriting and I am really serious! When I handwrite my grocery list even when I print it I still don't know what I wrote and that is truly sad! But, seriously I did used to enjoy writing letters on pretty stationery and I loved getting letters in the mail too! But, I do believe that those days are gone forever for the most part thanks to computers and cell phones! It's ok with me sort of because I do love my computer and typing, but I will miss the "old way" too~

I understand what you're saying, I love stationery, pretty paper and getting letters. I also would love to improve my handwriting, I should not write in a hurry yet I do. I will miss letters but you know what, it is something we do not have to lose at all.

I personally believe it is something that we should revive. You get a better feel for what you are saying when you put it on paper. Sending personal letters gives the recipient such a warm and loved feeling, I really like to send hand written letters to people. I always get a warm response from them. Online journals and the like have their use, and it is faster for sure to be typing rather then printing or writing script, I just really have an affection and a bond for the written word. Sincerely and With Appreciation.

I think for a lot of people writing on paper might be outdated. I still write in my journal occasionally because I want something I know I will have. If all technology suddenly messes up one day. Some people would have nothing. Go crazy. I still write down lists, schedules, and thoughts and ideas for writing. But truth is writing in its self has become so much easier to share because of the internet and other outlets. Because of technology expressing our feelings has become ten times more accessible. In a way it's a good thing. Except gossip spreads faster, drama starts easier, and you know as the truth goes down the line it becomes less and less of a truth. So in many ways the old letters by postal mail, the love letters, the journals, the history it's all being forgotten. I think it's good to try and revive what you can, but some things are hard to change.

You are right, you have also reminded me that I do still write some of my thoughts in paper and at church there are people still writing notes. I am not sure what the future will bring, I am hoping for one that books will be easier to read, but that we always remember to put to paper our thoughts, it takes time and it is our whole body working on it, you are right when you said gossip travels faster through today's devices than before. I also remember having to come back home to share my day, now If I want I have a least five ways of doing so, sharing a bad moment or day: twitter, facebook, email, text or a call for 40 plus tax per month thanks to my cell phone company lol.

ShellyB, most writers and me alike still write on paper using either a pencil or a pen. It gives us the chance to perfect our writing before publishing it. It also helps to provide no room for errors and mis-spelling. I think writing on a paper with pen will never be outdated.

I think its not. Electronics e-mails doesn't put writing out of style it only makes people to connect quickly with an instant cute style in the background, but as I can see it, it makes writing using a pen more personal, more thoughtful and sweet, in these days of technology it takes someone with lots of love for you to give an effort to cut out colored papers to give you a beautiful card with a long pen writing message inside of it and makes trouble under the heat of the sun to go to the post office to send you that postal mail. Isn't that sweet? hehehe! God bless you.

You are right, I have not thought of it that way. I believe I will start wriring letters to my friends even if they do not live far away, it seems like a fun thing to do and it shows that I care a lot :D
