Name of home

India
June 14, 2010 9:03pm CST
Generally our homes are given a name. Some are named following our gods and goddesses, some after our parents, some has our name. In my language, Hindi ‘BHAWAN’ means home, ‘NIWAS’ means shelter and home too. . I had renovated my paternal house in 1980 and named it as ‘SUKDEO BHAWAN’, next I built a double storey building in 1993, and this I named ‘BISHNUPRIYA NIWAS’. Sukdeo is name of my late father and Bisnupriya is name of my late mother. In 2003 I built another home, it is a big one, I named this, ‘KALYANI BHUWAN’, Kalyani is my wife’s name and Bhuwan is my name. The paternal home and BISHNUPRIYA NIWAS, are given on rent; but KALYANI BHUWAN is used as our residence, it has guest rooms too. So do you also have names of your homes? Have you already built your home or stay in rented house? Do you rent a portion of your house? Please share, thanks in advance. Professor

Wah! Bhuwanji, Remembering our elders is simply great and naming the house after their name shows how much you care them and attached to them.Hope very soon we may see another discussion of yours about some more houses naming after your children too

We will not allow the God to call you so early, unless we see your discussion about many more houses in the name of each and every child of yours

hello professor saheb, good day to you.I live in a rented flat and the name of my building is GANESH BAUG.It is also sometimes referred to as Datta Mandir because there is a Dattatreya temple within our building premises. Both the temple and our building were built in 1939.Our building is also known as Maakad Chap building because there are 2 monkey forms engraved on the front of the building on either side. This is because the landlord is the owner of Nogi and company, the makers of the well known Monkey brand black tooth powder. The landlord ,who is no more had converted our building as well as the temple into the Shree Ganesh Trust and we pay our rent to the trust. Now there are plans to redevelop the entire building and construct highrise apartments and if that is done then i will become the owner of my flat.At the moment i am paying a meagre rent of Rs 309/- per month.

We bought our house about two and a half years ago and we've never given it a name, but I don't know of anyone around here that names their homes with the exception of people that operate a bed and breakfast out of their homes. We simply call our house our little houseand we are perfectly happy with it being that way. We are proud of the fact that we are able to have a home of our own and we hope to be able to do more renovations to it in the future.

My village home does not have any name but my uncle’s home in the city has a name. He was working with Armed forces and had a wish to name his house which includes something related to army so he named his house as “Armed House”. He was much attached to his regiment 75 battalion and talk about it many times.

Mandhara plant - Flowering Mandhara plant in my garden..
Hi Professor, Nice to read about some glimpses of your life. I remember a long time back one of our grand mothers house was burgled and the house had been named Shanti Sadan , which as you know is a house of peace.they decided to change that and renamed it Sai Kripa because they are all devotees of Satya Sai baba. Our own house is called "Mandhara" - simply because when we bought the old house with the garden the front yard had a huge Mandhara tree filled with lovely white flowers, which had to be chopped because it came in the way.But I managed to make another plant and have planted it...I have uploaded the picture..

dear professor, there are always names for big buildings here too, usually they name it by the surname of families. some by the purpose why the building was erected. but most of the residential houses doesnt have name. the mailman will only know it thru the numbers attached to it and the name of the village or street. thank you for this discussion. ann

Wow! I haven't had the chance of building a house for myself. I wish I could do that someday. I'm only 21 so I still have a long road to journey before that. Anyway, I'm living with my parents and they built our house. It doesn't have any name. It's just called "bahay" which is the Filipino term for "home".
