I am asthmatic and currently have a medium-haired cat. Asthma can not be cured and the key to live with it as to keep it under control so that means staying away from whatever triggers it, such animal hair/ dander, dust mites, etc etc. I found it difficult to control my asthma in the previous home as it had carpet all through. But since we moved in to a new place with hard flooring, therefore it is easier to clean, I can keep my asthma under control. However, the main principles are still the same in both places; always wash my hands after playing/ stroking the cat, keep the cat out of the bedroom and never wear the same clothes in the bedroom (the idea is to keep the bedroom as a clear zone). We also groom the cat outside every week and apply a special lotion onto her fur (she does not like it and always tries to run away!) to make the fur/ dander less aggresive. The lotion is harmless to cats and actually makes their fur softer. It may sound a lot of hassle but its worth keeping the cat.
PS: we also use a special vacuum cleaner to clean the house frequently.

If you already have asthma they can irritate it but I don't think they can give you asthma. You can get illnesses from the faeces the worst is called toxoplasmosis, but as long as you wash your hands after cleaning the litter try that won't be a problem either.

I have lived with cats all my life and I'm now in my mid 60's, I have five cats at the present time and I don't have any problems.
Personally, I think that the current epidemic of breathing problems is more to do with the increased use of chemicals in the home especially the so called "air fresheners." But also ordinary household cleaners can also add to the problem.

I have reason to believe that that is only a myth braught on to sway people from getting near, or having a cat as a pet. But, I assure you you're perfectly safe. If you have algeries, or have a cat that sheads a lot sneezing may be your only real concern.
However, some pet owners have gotten what's known as cat scratch feaver. Often this occours if a person isn't careful and doesn't clean up if a cat manages to scratch them. If one does, simply wash the wound carefully and disinfect the area. Just like any other wound.

I have never heard of anyone getting sick from their cats except if they have an allergy to them. Then they can have some real problems. I've heard of Toxioplasmosis, but have never heard anyone getting it that I know. I also know there is danger if a woman is pregnant and changes their litter box.
Cats are great pets though. If no one has asthma or serious allergies to them I would not be afraid of them for your kids. Make sure to wash and put antiseptic on any scratches they get and it should be fine.
