When You Rate Users (What is YOUR policy?)

I have found, in a recent discussion, that there was a user with a rating of 3 (brown star) but his response to the particular question was really good. Perhaps in the past he spammed a ton on myLot... perhaps he still spammed. But tonight I saw that he had a really good answer so I gave him a + rating.
This has gotten me to thinking. When you see a user with a bad rating, do you automatically either refuse to rate them or give them a bad rating? Do you not listen to what they have to say? Or do you even purposefully give them a good rating to bump them up?
I know in the past there was a lot of controversy surrounding the ratings on myLot to the point where popular users, in protest of the rating system here, asked for other users to rate them poorly. As I have just come back to this site (tonight, actually) I don't know if these protests are still happening and really much of anything about the politics of the board. (What IS going on nowadays, by the way?)
I am just wondering what your policy is when you rate users.

I too see many new Lotters start off with a low star. I wonder if this is not always fue to them having received negative ratings but having received no ratings at all. Reading through discussions I notice that many Lotters do not bother rating at all and that is so sad, They gope others will rate them but don't nother doing so themselves.
I use the rating system in the way hat myLot suggest. I only use the negative for abuse and plagiarised posts (yes there ares till a lot of those ).
Since you have been away for some time you may not be aware that myLot made some improvements to the system to avoid abuse. New users cannot rate until they receive their own star at 100. They can rate but their ratings will not 'stick'. All users can only rate each user for a maximum of 11 times in each 24 hour period too. After that further ratings do not 'stick' either.

actually i am new to mylot and i am not aware of these ratings..... but what i understood is when we placed a discussions on mylot, the responses are important for rating... for now onwards i will put the discussions and i will rate those who will give response.... and moreover i am against those who protest in this mylot

I see every member here fairly whatever rating they have because I have to consider myself as someone who have been there or gone through the same as they were. I started with a small rating and improved to my rating now over the years, so it just goes to show that we all have a fair chance here to contribute regardless of our current rating. Definitely a (+) rating for users who post informative posts that really got me thinking that "yeah, he/she really has a point". And for those who have just neutral responses, I just ignore and move on to the next.
Best of luck.

I didn't even know we could rate people...
That said, now that I do know, I can say without a doubt that I'd be honest about it. There's no point giving people false hope and rating them positive when they are low just to bump them up. There's also no point in deliberately lowering a person's score out of spite. Tell the truth and everything will work out fine.

I have never actually given anyone a (-) rating, I tend to just ignore spammers etc, but I always mark(+)rating for good and interesting responses and discussions, regardless of a person's rating.
I think that it is only good and fair that we do mark all responses.

I myself don't give negative rating to users. I just rarely even use the rating buttons. I can remember that I have given a couple of users a plus rating for their interesting answers. I don't give much importance to the previous rating the user have received and just give a rating based on the response only. If I like the response I give a plus other wise I just ignore rating it. I don't like giving a negative rating.
Happy myLotting.

My policy is to give only positive ratings unless users are rude and nasty, or they have posted referral links in the discussion. I want to help others as much as possible. I have seen my ratings go up and down, and I have never really worried to much about it, as I know that thee are some that will rate negative for no reason. I will rate others positive, regardless whether I get a negative rating or not. It really is a shame like diana sadi, when users won't rate at all. I think they are afraid of doing the wrong thing, or maybe they just don't know they can rate others. I don't think it is fair to ask others to rate them when they don't rat others themselves. I will continue to rate the rating system no matter what. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

I always give a (+) rating. If I dont like the answer, I give it a (+) also but dont pick that answer as the best. Ive never given anyone a (-) and dont plan on doing so. I believe we are here to discuss issues and there are NO bad answers.
