Well actually I still haven't learnt to swim .. here I am well past middle age and a non swimmer .. but I do have quite a fear of water My mother was scared of water and would constantly warn us not to go near water .. so in fact passed on her fear to us (my sister hates water too) .. so we were never allowed to go to the swimming pool .. I also had a terrifying experience when I went to my secondary school .. they had a real terror of a PE teacher and she pushed me into the unheated outdoor pool one day .. the shock of being instantly submerged in the cold water near killed me .. I have asthma and it sent me into a serious asthma attack and all she did was told me to lie down on the concrete and 'get over it' and all this was early in the morning on a very cold February morning ... I was eventually carted off to hospital as an emergency .. but that was enough to put me off water for life ..

If that happened today you could SUE her to the hilt and she'd also be charged with child abuse! That was totally despicable. I bet she didn't get reprimanded either.

Hey, I've heard it's a bit difficult to learn to swim once you grow up! It's nice that you could do so at the age of 18. Well, I learnt it when I was around 3 or 4 and it took a lot of people to teach me- my father, my uncle, the coach at the club where I used to swim and a few others too. Swimming is by far the best recreational activity according to me! It is very relaxing and is a good exercise in itself.

I learned from an aunt when I was about 4 (we had a summer house near by a lake). I remember I was afraid of being bitten by some big fish lol

Are you serious you only learnt when you were 18? Thats pretty interesting :) I learnt when i was about 2 or 3 i think. I went to lessons with someone. And now i love swimming, its relaxing. Specially in the sea, ok well in the sea is just good fun, body surfing the waves. Yeah so i was taught by a stranger when i was really young. Good on ya for learning tho

Have never really learnt to swim, was forced to take swimming lessons at school, for what they counted for 6weeks each year, was there really a lot of point? Didn't do me a lot of good though as I failed my 10 metres, bit embaraasing, especially as I live right near the sea. Am determined that my son will learn though, but by making it fun, not the way we were meant to learn, he loves the water and want him to be safe in it, I still don't like it much but force myself to endure it :S

Many people have tried to teach me how to swim but they all failed. I always tend to go down no matter what technique people use. I don't know why but I always have wanted to learn how to swim. When the water reaches my shoulder level I get nervous and start to panic and then I loose control of myself then I would drown next. Sigh! I grew up near the sea but shame on me for I never acquired the ability to swim.
