At the moment, the football (soccer) World Cup is on so it made me think of important sporting events and how people remember them. So I wanted to share my memories and to read yours too.
The sporting event I first remember watching was the 1980 Olympic Games from Moscow. I was 10 years old at the time and it sparked my interest in the Russian language, which I eventually studied at University from 1988 to 1990!
I fell in love with the Soviet and Romanian gymnasts at the 1980 Olympics - stars like Nadia Comaneci, Nelli Kim, Elena Davydova and Emilia Eberle. (Later on, I would name my daughter Emilia after her!)
I did gymnastics myself after that and many events inspired me after that. I loved watching the 1984 Olympics when Mary Lou Retton (USA) narrowly beat the Romanian star Ecaterina Szabo.
I remember other sports too over the years, such as Gary Lineker and Michael Owen doing well in football internationals, the Zola Budd and Mary Decker controversy, Steve Cram and Steve Ovett's many races and Seb Coe too, figure skating stars like Katarina Witt, Torvill & Dean, Bestiamanova & Bukin, Gordeeva & Grinkov...
More recently, I remember when British gymnast Beth Tweddle became World Champion and I cried!! Also in May at the European Championships, the British team got so many medals and I cired again.
Watching the 1980 Olympics at 10 years old, I never would have dreamed the British team would be winning World, European and Olympic medals for gymnastics in the 2000s!

Hi Karen, I remember Wimbledon when John McEnroe had his tantrum and said you can't be serious lol but don't remember the year. I don't really follow sport that much but always remember the Grand Natiional as it is usually run around one of my daughters birthdays and a friend always places a bet if it is on her actual birthday and always wins. I will remember the start of the Football World Cup though as my nephew was born that day :) Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh yes, McEnroe was a real character! I still enjoy listening to him, when he comes over to Wimbledon each year.

I also remember Nadia Comaneci. She was incredible. I remember we watched her in awe with my husband.
But for me, since ever, THE SPORT has been football (soccer). My husband was a pro soccer player in his time and went to England (1966) as part of the team that represented Chile. I just showed my grandchildren a couple of day ago the medal I have which says "Jules Rimmet Cup". That was the last time that Cup was played. If a country won it 3 times, it would be theirs for keeps. So now it is forever in Brasil, mainly thanks to Pele. From then on, there was this cup that is being played now.
In those times, we also saw every fight by Muhammed Ali. I suppose there hasn´t been a more gifted fighter than him.
I was a big fan of Maradona too although I was very worried at a time looking at how he wasted his talents. But I saw him play once, not young anymore and he (like Pele that I also saw play against my husband´s team)was a show by itself.
Take care!

They are fun, Karen. But I think that sports are not the more important part of these get togethers. My husband´s pals practically lived together some years of their youth. They belonged to the best soccer team Chile ever had and they toured all around the world playing. So it´s more like a get together of family. When my husband was very ill, one of his friend´s wife came to my house and stayed here to be in charge of the kitchen, the visitors and even the doctor. She even discovered very small beautiful plates to put bits of food for my hubby so he would be tempted. I am blessed to have these friends!

Yes, Nadia was amazing, still one of the all-time sporting greats!
That is wonderful that your husband represented Chile in the 1966 World Cup! How wonderful!
You must have amazing memories of seeing legends like Pele and Maradona play live!!

I am pleased you have such wonderful memories, as they must really help with the loss of your husband. You can still see those times in your mind and remember them fondly. I am glad you still see his teammates too, those barbecues must be great fun with lots of reminiscing!

Is the America’s Cup a sporting event you are referring to? The reason I ask this is because in 1983 Australia won the Cup in Fremantle Western Australia which is where I live and the atmosphere here was amazing! Nobody got any sleep on that last night and everyone went to work bleary eyed but happy. Shortly after our win the Australian Prime Minister at the time jokingly announced that all bosses should let employees off work and if anyone who doesn’t “is a bum” (LOL) I will never forget those great times although it is a really long time ago now!

Karen is referring to soccer´s World Cup, paula. Many countries of the world are playing for it, not only America. It is being played in South Africa and changes country every year.

Last night I watched England game and so upset. I can't believe it happened. My friends were upset too, they even wanted to turn off the TV. I worried about my TV and let them changing the channel.
I don't want to forecast now. What will happen next with England? Some people made jokes saying they were in dream.

Hiya karen,
In the Olympics I always look out for the Spanish and English Gymnasts as I follow all of them if I can note the word if.
I can remember lots of things in the Gymnasts in a lot of Games.
My very favourite Ice Skater is Irina Slutskaya she does not compete anymore as she is a Mother and she looks after her own Mother too Natalya who was a Cross Country Skier she is in need of a kidney transplant.
Apart from all that I follow the Russian Gymnasts too but not only them I follow the Ukraine and all the other Countries that were once part of Russia.
However one of my best moments was Gervasio DeFoe the Spaniard Gymnast won a Gold Medal in one of the Olympics and when the greatest Swimmer Gemma Mengual won her Gold Medal eventually after all those years of gruelling Competition and being marked down so many times too.
I have followed a few bad moments too when they did nothing but to run down a Mexican Girl who was doing very well inspite of all the things going against her. I just don´t think Commentators like that should be allowed not to run People down.
The Mexican Girl had to have some Category to get there in the first place. I thought their commentaries were way out of place.
Another one that puzzled me was a Russian Gymnast they just kept marking him down on everything he did and he did not make mistakes like the others.

Hiya karen,
Yes Irina´s Mother is quite ill to say the least and things being the way they are there I suppose it will take time for her to be treated with success. Irina now skates but only when she wants to and she still does it very well not skipping the jumps or anything. I am glad Irina now has a choice as to what she can do. Watch out for Gervasio de Foe as he may not compete in National Competitions or International on that level after this year I think. He is such an elegant Gymnast.
I love watching most Gymnasts anyway whatever Nationality. It´s such a shame that Britain is´nt able to get up there as I know there are many brilliant Gymnasts from Great Britain and they just don´t make it from lack of support on all levels.
In Summer I don´t have Eurosport but I do try to watch the Diving as I try to look out for the British Divers always Leon what his name and the other one they are fantastic. Spanish male divers that do make it are a bit lax to me but the Spanish Women like Dolores Ibarra is another kettle of Fish she is very good.
Spanish Women Gymnasts are brilliant too they put a lot of personality into what they do. I like it when they show that they are human and not jumping machines.
Irina gave a lot to skating with that lovely bubbly character she has. She has such a lot of power that other Women skaters don´t have or they are not able to transmit. The British Women Gymnasts bring this across as well. I don´t care much if they don´t get Gold Medals just showing up and doing the best you can gives you the best publicity for me.

Yes, I also follow all the nations that used to be the USSR as I love the old Soviet style of gymnastics. The Spanish have some good stars too. I used to like Eva Rueda years ago and now Izurieta is very good.
I remember Slutskaya but I had not heard about her mother.

I was thinking about this the other week, about memorable moments.
Being football (soccer) mad you would think it would be some game, but one event that sprang to mind was Ice Dancing - Torville & Dean.
I am not into ice dancing At All but they did something nobody else had ever done.
The other event was Bob Beaman breaking the long jump record, I think 2 feet further than anyone had evr jumped before - Up, Up & Awayyyyy !

What comes to mind to me is seeing the Olympic Games held here in Australia in 2000. The atmosphere was great and just being apart of it was a lifetime memory which I will never forget. We mainly watched the tennis and swimming events and it was amazing.

Yes, the worldly events are wonderful and I do remember many of them and watching gymnastics and all the other exciting events.
I must admit though, my favorite sporting events to watch happen to involve my kids. My sons played soccer, football, basketball and baseball growing up. I loved watching them run down the field, making a goal. I found that I was more excited over those memorable moments than ever. I also remember the reactions of their friends seeing how excited they would each get.

For me, it isn't really the national or international sporting events that stand out in my mind. I was brought up in a family that placed a lot of emphasis on sports for the children, so it is the sports that I played as a child that really stand out to me. I was a baseball player first and I remember when my team won the league tournament when I was seven years old. Then perhaps the most important memories that I have of my own sports are when I as on the neighborhood swim team that I swam on from the time that I was nine years old until I was fifteen years old. The reason that sticks so strongly in my mind is because it was something that I invested a lot of myself into.

The Olympics always makes me interested and since this is the only sports events where our country qualify since we don't have soccer team. Another one is boxing, right now we have Manny Pacquiao as the World champion and every fights of him is memorable for every one of us here.
