Heya! so right now i am working on a promotional and free cross platform game for my band, and i was going to use a co-op system with a mix of third person shoot em up action and sandbox style engine. similar to the old gauntlet games, but with a sci-fi theme. what i want to find out, is what do you gamers think about this combination? I know right now playing online with friends or random people is all the rage these days, but id like some input as to what gamers are really looking for in a coop game. storyline, replay ability,, a good user interface and AI, a engaging and unique world and good character designs are important, and i would like to know what you guys think is lacking in most co op games these days. as im trying to create something that everyone can enjoy online and offline.

If its anything like gauntlet games I'm sure its going to be epic!! I think what you need to stay away from is how the coop in halo worked (Player one is the one that pics the path and shows up in cutscenes and is the point of attention while Player two just helps when its time to pull the trigger). Make sure that both have a special element in the story. Giving them completely different looks and different attitudes. Make them foil characters (opposites reflect in each other) but that somehow at the same time they are able to work with each other. Try to make it so that each player brings in an important piece of the storyline with it. The big thing here is to give the feeling that two real people come together to help. If you could squeeze in there some decision-making in which either only P1 or P2 make the decision or both have to agree on it, it would be great!Make sure that each has a special ability that without it the story cannot go on. Last but not least, add AI that won't react in same exact ways to P1 as they would to P2. If you've ever played Army of Two you know how the player that shoots the most is the one the AI shoots. Try to incorporate something like that. I'm sure you will make an amazing game!

thanks for the input, i really like your suggestions and as i jsut beat army of two coop yesterday, i know what you mean by the aggro system. what im hoping to do is bring something like that with a bit smarter ai into the mix since there will be a total of up to 4 player co op support. this will allow for pincer and flanking and various other attacks to box the enemy in, but the same can happen to you, as you will be generally outnumbered on a regular basis, so developing a strong defense strategy is also important, and can add to the games replay value.
