Where there has been a huge lack of encouraging words spoken over you in your lifetime, you need to learn how to
BUILD YOURSELF UP
with the Word of God, and not just wait for everyone else to come and lift your spirits.
Even if you are in a tough or dry kind of season in life.
STIR YOURSELF UP.
Position words of life wherever you spend time, so that even if you don't FEEL like getting happy, you cannot avoid it.

Building yourself up is a hard thing to learn to do, as well as learning to deal with the inner critic.. This does not always have to involve religion or spirituality...
But can involved simple words of encouragement, inspirational sayings, as well as affirmations. On my life and path though prayer and worship time.. is very important to building myself up and staying positive. .. I however fall into the pits often dealing with depression and fear.. so I am not gonna pretend I am the most happy and positive person in the world... But, it is at those times you feel most down is the times you need to find the positive and inspirational sayings, stories, read the Bible, or Chicken Soup for the soul books, or stories about your favorite topic, or hobby etc.

Thank you for starting this discussion. There is so many areas of the Bible that can be used for encouragement. I like Psalms. Of course we can also use the parts that teach us how to think, fruits of the spirit. I love listening to Christian music, particularly contemporary. Sometimes I sing with it, sometimes I just listen. Putting encouraging thoughts on postcards and putting around house is helpful. I am on medication for depression, yet when I need Him, He is always there for me.
