I have heard of Home-Schooling, and I have heard of Non-Schooling, where the parents do not send their kids to school and do not believe in home-schooling, either.
What are your thoughts on this?
I see how kids who come to school and don't have a lot of parent involvement - I can't imagine these kids being non-schooled. It must take a special type of parent to be able to this.

Well, I think that you are a little confused about what non schooling is. It is a choice that parents make to allow their children to learn and exoplore the world without a classroom setting. Children must know how to read and write. Children can learn many things without being in a structed classroom. Matter of fact, although I choose to home school, I see many positive points to non schooling. My daughter seems to learn a lot more when she is doing something that she is interested in.
This year we done a literature study on horses and she learned much more than if we had just picked up a science book. She actually learned science, history, and grammer and literature skills.

I have heard of this also but how do they become literate? There must be a certain amoutn of home teaching going on or the kids would be completely clueless. I think thta unless you have really bright kids from bright parents it would be a complete disaster, just my feeling, school may not always be fun, but in most cases it is necessary.

That is ridiculous. Kids need a proper education. And education isn't just about what they learn in books and on the bulletin board. It is about what they learn socially from their peers. That is why I don't entirely agree with home-schooling either. If kids don't get to spend time with people of their own age group, they lack socialization skills and can have a hard time integrating themselves into the workforce in the future.
And Non-schooling...that should be grounds for having the child taken away from the parents. They are being negligent as far as proper care of their kids. It is the parents' job to provide an education for their kids. Even if that is through home-schooling or through traditional brick and mortar education, it is important and imperative to provide some kind of education for kids. There is a lot to be said about life experiences being taught but, life doesn't teach you how to spell, do simple daily math, speak properly, and read, among many other important skills we all learn in school.

I think it may be due to religious belief. I have heard of Jehovah's Witnesses of not believing in higher education and do not allow their children to go to colleges, in fear that higher education will bring about greed and hunger for power and money, which are undesirable outcomes from this world. So if bringing it to the extreme, they may not even want their children to go to school at all. Maybe just teach them a jobs skill to earn a living. In poor countries, there are also cases where parents have no money to send children to school so these children would also be non-schooled. It's not really that unimaginable in such circumstances since they would just be helping out in agriculture works and eventually take over their parents for that.

God! How I wish my mom and dad never sent me to school! :( It is such a mental torture for me to be studying so much and fulfill their expectations! I get fatigue most of the time, and what's even more is that my teachers and classmates worry about me but my own parents don't. T_T
Anyways, about non-schooling, I pretty much agree with the first poster. If the parents have money, business and wealth, they should pretty much spend their time teaching their kids the basic stuff, and then teach them lots strategies in the market to make their business successful!

hi kimbers my feeling on this is its much too loose, and there
should be some structure. Most children would opt to play all
day unless there were some sort of lesson plans. I think non
schooling is a farce. Home schooling on the other hand does
very well for many parents and their children. We all need
some sort of structure in our lives. Even in our jobs we
must have some idea of what needs to be done and when, and
how to best do these things.Children really cry out for some
sort of boundaries even when they claim they do not. I think
all it takes is lazy parents and spoiled children. No I do
not think non schooling is very appealing to me.

well I think those parent already know the secret to be success with any knowledge needed actually lots of rich man in this world are those who failed in their school and those who didn't even know how to speak other language.
I think they will only teach their children the basic read and write then they will teach it how to handle their company or something like MLM business and this online business which don't require lots of knowledge.
Just like me I never earn money from the course I studied when I was in college I even don't get the chance to use it in my everyday life.
Those parent must be know a lot and expert on something to come up with that kind of decision for their children.
Even though I didn't use the knowledge I got from school I think people still need to be on school no matter what because in school there are lot of thing that can be develop on us.
Like social life / having friend / experiencing the life with so much activities to make with teacher and friends / and the basic info of caring others.
well for me Experience is the best teacher in life and we can only get that if we go out and don't stay on our home 24 hrs a day.
I know we can also learn from internet and other thing inside our house but we still need to be in real action in life.

i think you it's somehow related with out of school youths. it's really disappointing that there are parents who doesn't allow their children to go to school especially at least in elementary.
i learned from my professor that the education of a child is the responsibility of the parents during the child's elementary and junior years. But its the child's responsibility to send himself to school for college, but if the parents still support his child until college, then it's good.
Fortunately, there are some alternative schooling that the government here in our place offers. ALS is an alternative way for youngbloods to pursue and reach their dreams even if they haven't stepped on elementary or junior years.. it is especially built for youths who are willing to learn and earn their own money.
Personally, i think that if a parent doesn't want his child to go to school, the child should try to send himself, he must do everything he can to be the best him.
some parents are irresponsible, but if a child really wants to go to school, no one can stop him from going, not even an irresponsible parent. :)
