Is there any rule for on line chat?

I have many friends around the globe, most of them I got from different friendship sites. We chat using Yahoo messenger and Skype mostly. But I never visit any chat room, only chat with friends in my list. Some are like my family members, here we chat; share our feelings, culture, traditions etc. But to be honest, I am still in the process of learning, am not acquainted with the short cuts, like TY, yep, yup, I prefer to use ‘THANK YOU’, ‘YES’, ‘NO’ rather. Many say hmm, after each sentence, just don’t know why? Another confusing term for me is ‘LOL’, this means, ‘LAUGH OUT LOUD’, right? But what is there to laugh? And why use after each sentence? So is there any rule for chatting? Do you chat? Do you use yahoo or Skype or Gmail chat, please share. Please tell me about this, hmm, yep, yup, lol in details, thanks in advance. Professor

No prof saheb, i don`t chat because of the lack of time besides the time difference is too much.I am on my pc just for 2 hours in the morn between 11 am to 1 pm.LOL means Lots Of Love and hahaha, not what you have written.I am acquainted with American slang since childhood so i don`t find it confusing at all.Good day to you and waiting for your call this evening.

actually, professor is right. LOL means laugh out loud. Maybe the lol you've been using is a colloquial term for writing letters, not chatting.

well, yep and yup aree american english words that means affirmative, like yes. as for hmm, it's the sound that a person makes when he/she is thinking. kinda like the sounds "uhm" and "er" and "ah" we make when we talk. LOL is an expression you type when you want to laugh loudly, but i prefer using haha, hehe and hihi rather than lol. Most terms used in chat right now are abbreviations. This is because it requires less time and energy to type. Some abbreviations you might encounter are: idk - I don't know nvm - never mind c u - see you c u l8r - see you later afaik - as far as I know rofl - rolling on the floor lauging lmao - laughing my as* off roflmao - rolling on the floor laughing my as* off brb - be right back gtg or g2g - got to go or bye bb - bye bye or bye afk - away from keyboard (means they're not in front of the computer) pm - private message, private chat wtf what the f*ck ftw - for the win fb - facebook there is also what we call netiquette, which is a code of conduct that we should follow when using the Internet especially when posting in forums or while instant messaging (chat). Here are some common points: 1. Do not use all caps. It makes you appear angry 2. Do not use a lot of exclamation points for one sentence, example: "not like this!!!!". It makes you appear like your shouting or angry 3. If you can avoid it, don't use red, because again, it makes it appear like you're angry 4. always be courteous to the person you're talking too 5. avoid racist and sexist remarks 6. If you've got nothing good to say, don't say it at all. Hope this helps :)

I am so happy to have read your response to our dear Professor because I think that your response is very informative and helpful to me. It is great that I have learned so much from your response. Like Professor, I often feel puzzled about short forms, most of which are not known to me. Thank you for your response. Have a good day, knicnax.

Thanks for your response! I have had some problems also with this online language shortcuts, specially since my native language is not English. But there´s a shortcut in Spanish too and I have to ask my grandchildren to explain many times. In this case, I think that saying LOL expreses my feelings.

I always chat with family members, relatives and friends only which are only in friends list so there are no specific rules while chatting, and I would say these types of wordings we use are simply modern one which are used by most people who are friendly with it. I also used some of them myself and sometimes it is quicker to respond to the other however I want to say that in my messages in cell phone I always used full wording thus never the short cut one.

Well, I think there is no rule, the only thing I can say is talk what you wish to talk on chatting. I am using Yahoo, Skype, Gmail, etc. The most comfortable zone I felt is Skype and Gmail. Hmm means you agree, it actually depends on what you and your friend(s) have been talking about to make them get that reaction. If it something serious then many have this thing to put "hmm" in their reply on to think or say to you. If it something simple then it's some sort of play or telling you that I'm thinking to make you smile at least. But, as I said, it all depends on what you guys are talking about in your chat and how you react. yup means Yes, and you can use it as per your wish. There is no restrictions on adding or making it more easy way. Generally youngsters use these common words which is very very normal with writing and spelling out as well. LOL, an abbreviation for laughing out loud, laugh out loud, or sometimes lots of laughs, is a common element of Internet slang. Thanks and have a nice day!!

hello Prof, The terms of "lol" yep..hmnnn,are just shortcuts of what one person feels. Lol...actually doesn't mean laughing out loud all the time. Sometimes,it just signifies that, the person on the other line is simply smiling with our statement/story or sign of appreciating our chats.(unless,we are talking with our friend,or else,"lol" means the other person is trying to annoy us) Yep,yah, i also use that for agreeing ,and hmnnnn,i use to say that,"maybe" or like "aha" it means to me "i agree,i disagree,or i am thinking what more to say ". Well, sometimes, those words are just an expression my dear friend. Have a good weekend ahead

I haven't used an instant messenger to chat for quite some time now because the one that I used to love doesn't exist anymore and I've not been able to find another that I like as much as the one that I used to have. However, as a part of my digital scrapbooking, I go to a lot of chatrooms online with subjects related to digital scrapbooking. Those I do see that people use the abbreviations that you are referring to, but I don't see that people are using them after everything that they say. So a few of the common ones that I see are: LOL - laughing out loud ROFL - rolling on the floor laughing BBL - be back later HAGN - have a good night
