People joke that “business ethics” is an oxymoron. But we all look on with a sense of moral indignance when we learn that a company’s executives have cooked the books or that the CEO of an oil company that shall remain nameless withheld evidence that the the environmental damage his company caused is more extensive than the public was led to believe. A California Job Journal article reminds us that part of being a professional is accepting the responsibility for distinguishing between right and wrong and refusing to go along with unethical behavior—even if it means not getting a raise or promotion, or losing one’s job.
