Happiness can be defined as "a state of well-being and contentment" (Source: Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary). According to Mahatma Ghandi- "Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do is in harmony".
There are many research our there that could prove happiness is the key to a longer life. People who are happy will rarely get sick. Is this true?
But how do we keep our happiness if we ourselves are prone to some personal or family problem? We are human after all, we are not immune to some setbacks in life.
Your suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, indeed. I strongly believe that when a person is happy, his/her body produces good hormones that make a person healthy. Aside from that, when a person is happy, it simply means that he/she is not stressed out. Stress is believed to be one of the killer objects for humans.

I agree, if a person is happy his/her body produces good hormones, just like when the body reacts if the person is depress. for me, if depression can kill then happiness makes you alive. :) we can't dodge sadness/loneliness, so just learn how to balance. be happy!

Hi there pentagan12 and yin yang,
Definitely agree with every word you have written. When you are happy you will always smile. In addition when you laugh you even be more happier. Remember the famous quote - Laughter in the best medicine! To me, happiness is everybody's goal in life, it's about making choices and making the best ones for your life.

Hello,
Yeah, happiness definitely contribute to a longer life. Not only that, happiness is the essence of living a productive and positive life. I personally believe that people who are happy do heal faster, but I am not sure if they get sick less frequently. I believe happiness is a choice. If we independently and consciously choose happiness, we can be happy forever. This is a technique and is mastered by those who have lived a highly productive life. It is the interpretation that makes us either happy or sad. We must learn to interpret things correctly and in a way that in turn helps our progress. A happy person is also a good interpreter. There will always be setbacks, but a wise person always has some positive interpretation even for the most troubled moments. There is light and darkness in every single thing. We don't deny any of them, as doing that will only be a violation of truth. But when it comes to incorporating things in our life, we only take the positive side. Thanks
God bless you

Hi getbiswa2000,
I agree with you all the way to the last of your words especially your statement:- "we must learn to interpret things correctly and in a way that in turn helps our progress". Yes, that is the keyword. I read somewhere the phrase - when there is an obstacle or problem there could also be an opportunity. Thanks friend.

Hi gunsirit! I do believe that probably is true. It is believed
that the less stress you have and the happier you are the less
you will get sick and the healthier you will stay! I myself have
always been sickly even as a child. I tend to have a weak immune
system. I am always stressed out and tend to get sick more often
than most people. So, I guess that means my life expectancy will
be shorter than others? I am already 57 so how much longer do
I have? I hope I still have alot more time to go because I don't
really want to leave this earth just yet!

A pleasant day to you gunsirit,
For me, happiness contributes a lot to a longer life. And, its very rare for a happy people to get sick.
The heart of a happy person tend to be more healthy as compare to those who are not so happy. The reason why they are rarely to get sick. Aside from that, people who used to be happy easily relieves themselves from stress. Though, they cannot avoid it, it will be easy for them to free themselves from the stress that they encounter.
On the other hand, you have the point, its not that easy for a person to be happy if he or she is facing a personal or family problem. But, it does not end there. People who are facing some problems - either personal or family issue can still have a longer life. Its just a matter on how you handle the situation.
Perhaps its best to try handle them with a prayer. For me, prayer is the best answer. As they say, God knows best. However, please dont think that right after the prayer, everything will be alright, instead, God will give us His blessings one by one. A wisdom for us to look for the best answer to our problems. The knowledge on how to solve it properly. The light which can lead us to the right path and the people with whom God uses to give us the strength or some financial assistance.
And the last one is to do our part, that is, as they usually say, "Let us do our best and God will do the rest". And maybe we should know how follow what God wants us to do.

If there are problems and imperfections in life, those are just normal being human. Those are the spice of life and that should make a person stronger. If indulging yourself in too much problem and don't know how to handle it, you will just shorten your life. So even if there are setbacks in life, we have to learn to accept those wholeheartedly and as much as possible, do things that will make us happy. Genuine happiness is not really expensive anyways.

ya,you are right. We humans are born with being negative. It is perfectly our choice to change our attitude. Being happy always is difficult but not impossible. When you are happy you have a lot of positive thoughts. You think positive and you attract positivity. So even if you are sad, try and make believe that things are fine, and make your self feel happy. Watch the movie 'the secret'. you will understand what i am trying to tell you.

I think being happy does lead to a longer life because you have less stress in your life. you take things as they come and deal with them.

I think the answer is yes. A happy mood is good for one's heath and it is also good for one's relationship and if one has good relationships,he or she is more likely to be successful. When they are successful they will enjoy a better material life and this is benefitial to a longer life too.

The health of our bodies is better when we are happy. There are no bad things happening in our brains to set off neurotransmitters that aren't good inside of our bodies. I feel better when I'm happy, so I know that this is true.

yes, i believe so. happiness does contribute to a longer life. if you're a happy person, you tend to become more inspired, you become more accepting of other people. you develop a positive outlook in life. no matter what your situation in life is at the moment, when you're only thinking positive thoughts, it will reflect on your physical self.

Happiness does not lengthen the life of seriously ill people, but it does prolong the life of healthy people. Happiness appears to protect against falling ill. One of the mechanisms behind that effect seems to be that chronic unhappiness causes stress, which on its turn reduces immune response.
Another possible mechanism is that happiness adds to the chance of adopting a healthy life style.

Hi there again.:-)
We are indeed human beings capable of feeling all sorts of emotions. And sometimes it is really difficult to keep our emotions and mood, as well, in control especially when we are greatly affected by a certain situation.
But, for me, happiness is a choice. You can always do the things that can make you happy despite of the many downsides life has for us.You can either always see the bad side/sad side of life and sulk in its misery or you try to see the good/happy side no matter what troubles come your way.
The keyword to staying alive longer is the way you optimistically see life and how you can laugh at all your troubles.:-)
Have a great day.:-)

Whatever GandhiJi said is really true but not everyone can practice that, he was such a great man who could live to his values and lived such a long life, still alive.
I believe that happiness contribute to longer life, if I am happy it will be there on my face and sad would also be seen on the same face. Being happy or sad contribute to our health which is the most important parameter to live long. If I am happy, I am healthy, Being helathy and happy will live longer for sure.
Thank you for nice discussion.

There's always two parts in problems of us human beings. One is the part that you 'can' do something about, and the other part is the part that you 'can not' do anything about. With wisdom, we deal with the first part the best of our ability and leave the rest with an understanding that we've done the best we could. Find peace within ourselves and not without, and see to it what we could learn from the situation. Always remember the very people in your life who you love and love you, and live in the moment every single minute to it's fullest.

Usually its true, people who tend to live a life without any sort of stress extends their youth as well as their life. Though it is hard to believe anyone in the world has achieved this because there are all sort of things that stress us out. It's hard to stay happy throughout our lives. We can do our favorite hobbies to clear it or other things so we won't remember much about our stress temporarily.

Happiness has different definitions for different peoples. My friend won't be happy until he irritates his mom. So i think that if we do whatever we want to do without hurting others that would make me happy. I want also people around me to be happy with me and what i do. So it's kinda difficult for me.
