Hello pet lovers! I need your advice regarding my pet dogs. I have several pet dachshunds at home. 2 are female. Whenever the females give birth, they start to act wild, bark at random people, and even harm the puppies. It came to a point that me and one of our workers had to restrain the dog so she would loosen her grasp on the puppy. Can you, give me suggestions on what I can do in this situation on how i can handle my female dog and the puppies? I definitely love my pets and the new born puppies but i am worried and i don't know what to do. Thanks. Any suggestion, advice, stories, or comment is highly appreciated.

Oh congratulations to the new litter! The dog barking and trying to bite at people or other dogs is just acting normal. She does not want anyone to take her pups away from her, although some dogs never bite or act this way but there are that does like yours. You must take her and her pups to a quiet place and not easily accessible by other dogs and people. Just like humans dogs after giving birth needs sometime alone. Take her out after she has fed the pups that way she could have her mommy and me time. Ensure that all the pups are being fed- by the way how old is you dog? If she has given birth too young this is a sign of immaturity and you should hand fed the rest that she rejects. Make sure that they are kept warm.

She is afraid that others, strangers etc. will harm her puppies , so she is aggressive. Kep her and puppies away from others untill she gets comfortable then introduce her and puppies to others slowly

Hello bad daddy! I read your comment a few days ago but it's only now that i replied. I did try your advise and it does work. To be honest the first few days were tough coz we literally had to watch over her and we had to tie her mouth and legs. You have no idea how hard it was coz she was berserk the first 2 days that everyone in the family were considering climbing up the roof to get into our house instead of using the front door where she gave birth lol. Thankfully she's better now and i think slowly adjusting to motherhood. Thanks for your advise.

Be aware that your dog is responding to hormones caused by the birth. A dog will kill or just reject any weak puppy, she may also reject puppies when she has to many. You may have to hand feed rejected puppies becasue she may never accept them. Just understand that this is just Nature doing it's thing to protect your dogs.

Hello savypat. You are so right. Actually i mentioned i have 2 female dogs. Bertha and Artemis. Bertha really did have 9 puppies each when she gave birth and she literally ate the others and what was worse was for me to just see her bite the puppy's head off. It was really scary considering that she was so friendly then i see her acting so weird, as if she were possessed or literally insane

It is normal, I had a female dog at home too and when she gave birth to nine puppies it was a sight to be seen, because it was so lovely and touching, she bite the babies to show them something that they are not able to understand. Try to take the babies from the mother you will see how she love them then.

Hello med889. My first female dog also gave birth to 9 puppies. They were so cute and so adorable til i saw her eat some of them. It was heartbreaking and i felt numbed. I didn't know what to do. Fortunately the 2nd one is a better one. She did get berserk like seriously the first 2 days but i think she has shown improvement. We did have to watch over her so she wont bite the puppies or worse....eat! But i think she's better now.

You don't have to worry. Your dog's action is perfectly normal. She is just being protective of her babies when she barked at people. As for biting, she is carrying the babies. Unless you see blood, then you don't have to worry. My dogs (at different time) had given birth and have experienced some of the actions that you have mentioned. One of them even tries to bite us when we get near the babies. So nothing to worry about.

Hello sjlskl. Thanks for your comment. Actually i have 2 female dogs. the 1st went berserk and ate and killed some of the puppies. The 2nd one just gave birth and also went insane but thankfully it recovered after 2 days. It was really tough at first because my dog gave birth in the rag right outside the front door. Can u just imagine how she goes berserk when someone like me and family members try to go thru the front door. Come to think of it, we were tempted to climb up the window instead to enter the house.
