Why do I always respond to the discussions that get deleted?

I lost count all ready. I always end up responding most to the discussions that get deleted. I try so hard not to respond to the deleting-prone questions, but somehow, I fall into the trap. The most recent one that got deleted was 'How do you eat your french fries?" I can't figure out why it was deleted. I mean, maybe it's considered a poll or survey question? I don't know, but I had about 6 responses in that thread. I thought I was doing a good job 'discussing.' But hey, I'm not a myLot moderator, so I don't have the right to say what gets deleted and what doesn't.
Have you ever responded to a discussion that got deleted? Did your own discussion get deleted? Did you ever disagree on why your discussion was deleted? How many responses have you lost from deleted discussions? Do you have any tricks on how to avoid discussions that might be deleted?

I think it already happened to everyone here in mylot. Even though we have read the guidelines on posting here of course we cannot memorize it all. My tip is don't start a discussion that only have two choices, it could be a yes or no or your letting the posters choose between two. And also be sure to try to give more details on the discussion you are trying to start. And don't post on any discussion that you are sure it violated the guidelines of mylot. For sure this will be deleted along with your post.

Please excuse the intrusion, but I am going to butt in here for a moment. I might be completely wrong, but I don't believe that Juggerogre was saying that this discussion is going to be deleted, StephanieAnnC. I believe that the discussion deletion comment was in reference to the previous statement about posting to (responding to) discussions that violate the guidelines, because those discussions as well as your responses are sure to be deleted.

First off, I don't see how this discussion violates the rules. I just reviewed the guidelines.
Secondly, thanks for the tips. I actually use the one quite often. I feel like new users aren't as aware of the guidelines and post questions that aren't discussable. Even though the questions they post are fun and easy to reply to, they aren't good for discussions.

Oh! I don't mind you butting in! I wasn't trying to be rude! I hope I didn't come off that way! I apologize if I did! Thanks for clearing that up!
Sorry for misunderstanding your post, Juggerogre. I hope you forgive me!

I replied to many discussions deleted. A future deleted discussion is a good place to have some fun with friends without stealing a cent to myLot . I don't verify if a discussion is duplicated before giving a response, and sometimes I am surprised to see a good discussion removed. For the moment I had no discussion deleted : no member is under cover and I cross my fingers. Learning the guidelines is helpful, but every member can fall in a trap someday...
For your french fries poll : I eat french fries only with mussels .

Top, you are right that a future deleted discussion is a great place to have some fun with friends without "stealing" a penny from myLot. In addition, people should not complain about anything we post in those discussions, because they will be deleted anyway. If we are going to lose our time and earnings (well, I guess we are not exactly losing them, since we never really got paid for them and we are having fun, which is never a waste of time, but you know what I mean), then we might as well have a little fun while we can.

It would be mean, no ? I reply like you when I have something to say without making a search before. Here it is about french fries . They were invented in Belgium in the 18th century, and their french name "frites" come from "friture" i.e. "fried fish" -- they were served first with small river fishes --. Soon after they were served with mussels. You can't miss that dish : it is the best one for french fries.

It actually wasn't my poll. LOL But with mussels, really? That sounds interesting. Is it good?
I agree with you. I usually don't verify either. Maybe I should. I just respond to ones that I can respond to.

I have started a discussion that was deleted. It was considered a poll. I didn't mean for it to be a poll. I was trying to make it discussable, but I guess it didn't work out and the moderators deleted it. I'm glad the moderators are on top of their game though, you know?

I'm not necessarily worried. Just a bit annoyed. I mean, I try so hard to avoid those kinds of discussions, but seem to fall into trap. It's a bit frustrating, but I know that a lot of people on here do the same thing.

I try hard too, but I fail quit4e often to choose the 'good' discussions.
Yep. That was mine. How sad! It got a lot of responses. It was considered a poll or survey question. I guess it made sense. I feel like a lot of the ones that are deleted can be discussed, but then again, I'm not a moderator, so it's not up to me. Apparently I have poor judgment.

I had one about twio years ago with over 100 responses which was a real fun one where Ihad asked people about the lottery and to give me a number from 1 - 49 and I was going to go buy the tickets, I did in fact but none were winners but someone reported it - jealous I guess as such a lot of responses - an it was deleted Thought it was about having fun discussions as well as srious ones, isn't there enough sadness in the world.

I bet it was considered a poll or survey. I think that's probably the most common reason why they are deleted. Polls are surveys are always fun though, but not necessarily discussable. It's upsetting, but hey, we're on myLot and we follow the rules.

I do respond to discussions that get deleted, but more often than not I realize that they will be deleted before I respond to them. Usually, they are discussions that I know are violating the guidelines, and I try to help the original poster of the discussion as well as the other responders (who hopefully read all the other comments) by letting them know why the discussion is likely to be deleted. That way, they can learn and try to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Of course, there have been a few that I have responded to that were deleted, and I had not thought that they were violations, but that is more the exception than the rule.

Thank you. It does kind-of stink that our responses are deleted, even though we are trying to help. In the long run, though, I think that it is more beneficial than harmful, because it not only keeps myLot cleaner (and easier to find interesting discussions that are not just pages of repeated topics) but also it might help newer users to understand their mistakes and learn rather than getting frustrated and quitting when their discussions are deleted.

I have responded to discussions that have got deleted lots of times I'm afraid!!
What I try to do now is stick away from any that are dubious, the French Fry one would be considered a poll I think.
Check out the DON'T'sat http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx any discussions that fall into those don'ts will probably be deleted!
Another tip, look at the tabs, if it says 'guideline violation' in the tabs it has been reported, admin don't delete all of these but if they are against the rules they will delete them!!

Thanks for the link, I have re-read the guidelines. Some certainly make sense if they are yes/no responses though the one about similar topics is a bit dubious, as there are different angles to look at the same topic, also each discussion produces a different set of responses. Of course, any system is open to interpretation.

Thanks for the link. I'll definitely re-read the guidelines. Even if I know all the rules, I still feel like I fall into the traps of the 'not so discussable' discussion. I guess it might be because they're easy to answer? I'm not so sure.
Yeah. I've only seen 'guideline violation' in a couple tags. I hope I never see it in the discussions I create!

That one sounds like it got deleted for a picky reason. I mean, I know it's kind of a fluff question, but it isn't like the often seen then deleted "what is your favorite piece of fruit?". No, I don't often get my responses deleted because the discussion I answered is deleted. I'm pretty good at knowing which questions are doomed for deletion. However, I recently got a response deleted from a discussion that had no reason to disappear. My only guess is that the author of the discussion requested the discussion be deleted. I have never had any of my own discussions deleted, except for one time. And that was because I contacted mylot and asked them to delete it. That doesn't happen often though.

About avoiding discussions that will eventually be deleted? I get all the discussion notifications from my friends in my inbox. So before I answer anything else, I go through my friends discussions. And doing that, I rarely have responses deleted. I guess that is the good thing about people on my friend list. They are always quality discussion people.

I don't remember what the subject was exactly. It was kind of serious, but I remember as responses started coming in, I realized people didn't understand what I was saying at all. And I didn't want anyone to start fighting with each other, so I contacted the admin. and asked them to delete it.

May I ask what the discussion was that got deleted? I didn't even know you could request to have a discussion deleted! Not that I want to delete any of mine!
I get notifications about my friends starting discussions too. I don't think the ones I responded to got deleted.. I try to respond to my friends' discussions, but sometimes, I have nothing to say. I feel bad, but I'd rather not say anything, instead of making up random stuff just to answer.

StephanieAnnC,
I can only simply say that we just happen to commit ourselves in the error due to somebody's expense.
We can never be too careful and there's just some unforeseen circumstances in the post that warrant a take down.
Overall, it is not important, what is important is that you had bothered initially to check if the discussion had violated the TOS before responding or comment is already sufficient, what remains then would be for the moderators to justify, while we just move on and go about with our lives here in myLot.

StephanieAnnC,
Just don't be too critical as the deletion may also be that the post is a duplicate of another similar discussion started by someone else or that the post is plagiarized.
So, it is really not entirely your fault and difficult to spot sometimes.

I haven't started to many discussions so that hasn't been a problem for me yet. I have went to look at a discussion just to find it removed. Disappointing at times because I might have had something to say about the topic. Isn't it hard not to duplicate discussions? I mean how many single topics can there be. Shouldn't it be more of original content than duplicated topic?

Yes, I think it is hard not to duplicate discussions, especially when myLot's search engine isn't working. I feel like that happens quite often.
You should start posting some discussions! You never know! You might get a lot of responses! Just search it first and make sure it's within the guidelines. Good luck!

The one of mine that got deleted that I had a problem with was almost two years ago about Morachat and how I got banned on there. One of the moderators from there came on and started harassing me and my friends and they came right back at her. It was so hilarious. But it got deleted and when I asked why, I was told that it was because I was "dissing another site". Nope, I didn't agree with the deletion, but what can you do?

You can't really do anything. It's a pity sometimes, but hey, rules are rules. We have to obey if we want to be on this site. And that's what I do. No questions asked. It doesn't bother me that much. There are so many discussions on here, that if a few are deleted, it's not that big of a loss.

I'm not really here to make money, so I never stop to think about what is or isn't going to get deleted (though I'd bet you this discussion will because there've previously been billions of discussions about posts being deleted... and they all got deleted!). I respond to discussion that I think I can add something to, that's all. If it gets deleted, oh well, no big deal to me. I don't even pay attention anymore, but occasionally I'll get an e-mail from Mylot saying an answer was deleted because the discussion was deleted.

I don't understand why it could be deleted though. I'm not questioning myLot's algorithm. I'm merely stating that this happens to me a lot and wondering if any other users experiences the same thing and asking for tips on how to avoid it. I read over the guidelines and I thought it was allowed. I'm crossing my fingers now that it isn't.
I usually respond to a discussion that I can add something too. It upsets me a little to see my posts disappear because I felt like I could have englithened a person, you know? But, I'm glad that myLot is on top of things.

I have said this earlier but will say it again. 'Ambiguity' thy name is myLot guidelines! And because of this I am always in the 'When in doubt leave it' mode. However I just came across a topic where everyone was responding to knowing fully well that it qualified for deletion as they found the topic very interesting indeed. There are users here who go for this second option as the joy they get in responding is far more valuable than getting their reputation or earnings reduced. I am about to consider that option too! Just a doubt though. Are there any other serious consequences of repeated deletions of ones responses?
@purplealabaster (22091)

20 Jun 10
I am not sure that you understood what I was saying ... I was not suggesting that we should violate the guidelines at all. What I was saying is that when I respond to a discussion that I know violates the guidelines, such as "how much money do you earn on myLot per day" or something like that, then I know that my response will be deleted when the discussion gets deleted. However, that has not negatively affected me in any way other than I don't earn anything for my response and I lose the (post) count when the discussion gets deleted. I did not violate any guidelines myself when responding to the discussion, though, so that is probably the reason that there were not any negative affects from the response.
@purplealabaster (22091)
• United States
20 Jun 10
I think that it probably depends upon why the responses were deleted. If we are responding on a discussion that was violating the guidelines, then I do not think there are any consequences for our responses being deleted ... or at least none that I have noticed. I have responded on many of these discussions trying to help out and had many of my responses deleted, and other than not earning and having my (post) count go down, I have not noticed any other negatives. On the other hand, if a person is being abusive or flaming, then I think that will probably count against that person, especially if that person does it often. I can't say for sure about this as I have never had anything deleted for that reason, but I suspect that would probably be the case. I know that is not the kind of posts that you would be doing, though, so I think that you should be safe.

Hi sagar: I agree with you, it's better to search before starting a new discussion or you probably will lose your time. I think that it's all about inspiration. Even if a question has been asked so many times you can reformulate it and renew it asking something alike but with a different point of view, etc. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

I have experienced this quite often. It seems that today Mylot admin is much more serious to the discussions. If they are more like poll or survey discussions, it is easy for them to get deleted. In fact the discussion like "What's your favorite...?" were very common in the past and at that time they wouldn't get deleted. But today it is different.

I have lost responses after discussions were deleted and I think I had one deleted once. In my case the discussion got reported because one of the responses was abusive. He just did not like my ideas. In the end I had to ignore him as you cannot win an argument against someone who refuses to listen to any views but his or her own.
That is one reason I have not been here for a while. I do pop in now and then but I do not get involved as often as I used to.

If the topics are against the rules of myloting then they are sure to be deleted. Just see the genuineness of the topic. Read the rules of mylot carefully. Well, I have never faced such a problem. I have got good responses to my topics. Try and put topics that are very interesting. The topic must be such that it is related to majority of people.
