Is there any protection from Ebay?

I wasn't much of a ebay shopper, because I was afraid of scam, or falsified products online without my first inspection on it. A couple of friends of mine purchased some brand - name shoes from ebay, after they receive the actual box, they open it up, and find out those are actually fake ones. So, I just wonder if there is another protection from those kind of activities. Although you can rate them and report to ebay, but you already lost that money. So, would that be too risky for you, what do you think?

Always use eBay to contact the seller to see if they will refund your money. I had to do that with a book I bought on eBay that had a major misprint, the seller gave me back my money and let me keep the book.
