What i do is I go to their website and try to make a comparison of all the phones I like. Check on the features and specially the price. I make sure that I'm not paying too much for a phone. For one thing I don't like bulky phones so that trims down my choices.

It can be confusing to purchase a cell phone, with all of the different products and services that are available for mobile devices. In a typical buying scenario, it helps if you do things in order:
1) Equipment - what does the perfect phone do for you?
2) Voice plan - how many minutes do you need, and who do you call?
3) Text - Do you need unlimited texting? Remember to block premium text!
4) Data - Does the phone require it? Block it if you're not going to use it.
5) Taxes - calculate your monthly plan plus 14.5% in the US
6) Accessories - power, protect, and personalize your device.
If you do it right, and ensure you understand what you're buying, then a two year contract isn't an issue; you'll be happy and not worry about how much time you have to keep that device and service.

No i got used to my package, when i had the contract for 2 years i was offered to pick a new phone so i did but for my girlfriend because i am totally happy with my sony ericsson k750i which is 5 years old. Next one will probably be sony too and i heard and experienced how bad nokia is so i don't recommend it to anyone. My bill is 13-14€ per month by the way and i't stable.
