Yesterday my husband bought a collection of really old magazines. They are from the 1890s, so they are more than 100 years old. I like to buy old magazines, because I use the pictures in my paintings, but the oldest magazines I have had were from the 40s.
It was interesting to read some of the magazines from the 1890s, but I could only read them really, really slowly, because I am not used to gothic letters There were some very beautiful pictures in the magazines, and my husband and I spent a lot of time looking at them.
Are you interested in history/things from the past? What is the oldest thing you have bought or received?

So glad you asked!
My favorite "old thing" was the house I bought that had been built at the turn of the century. It had stood vacant for years, and no one had painted it in over forty years. My husband and I took out a loan, along with the mortgage, and totally refurbished the inside and the outside.
What we found when we stripped the inside of seven layers of wallpaper, was a house with a story. I found where the original door had been moved and the neighbors told me the house was used as a school when the local one burnt down. The kitchen walls revealed slatted patterns in the lathe and plaster. Further inquiries determined that the house had a one time been a store. The stories go on. If it were possible, I would return to that house and never leave again.
A few years ago I dated a guy who dealt in antique bottles. I became a dealer myself, attending bottle shows, and making purchases from ebay. Holding a "Hutchinson" bottle set me to wondering who drank from this over two hundred years ago? Very cool.

That sounds so fascinating! I would have loved to have visited and walked through that nice old home, and yes, I bet there are so many stories connected to it. I take it you sold it since you said you would return and never leave again.
Antique bottles are very interesting and I'm surprised you didn't find any of those in that old house, somewhere in the walls. Great story!

I sold the house to my best friend, so it felt as if I still was part of it. That was so long ago, I doubt she even lives there anymore. It's nice to think that just maybe she does.
That would have been so cool if I found bottles. But, even though no one lived in the house, someone still owned it and kept it somewhat together. Poor guy; he drove by the night we were tearing down wallpaper. He was so upset. "I just put up new wallpaper and you're tearing it down!" Whoops, "sorry," we said with guilty hands covered in dust and old glue.
Porcospino,
A hidden door? That gives me an intriguing plot for a little story I might compose someday, if I ever find time to write again.

Thanks for sharing the story about the house, it is really fascinating I love old houses, and is one of my dreams to buy an old house and discover the story of the house. My husband and I have looked at some old houses in the past, we don't have the money to renovate a house like that at the moment, but I really like the idea It must have been a fascinating experience to discover the story of the house little by little.
Some time ago I heard about a family who had bought an old house, and when they removed the wallpaper they discovered a door that had been hidden for many years. When they opened the door they found a room full of old things and they were even able to sell some of those things. It makes you wonder what happened in the past. Who covered the door and why?
The antique bottles sound interesting. When I find old things like the magazines that my husband bought, it also makes me wonder who bought them so many years ago. I will never find out, but it is still a fascinating thought.

Actually, it was only about 40 dollars. It was very, very small, no bigger than your pinky nail; and you had to look very closely to see the fine details. I bought it to see if it would bring me good luck, because that is what Buddha charms are supposed to do. Didn't make so much of a difference though :(, and it broke about a year after I had it :\. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about breaking it any more or losing it, because it is broken and long gone in the garbage.

I have also heard that they are supposed to bring good luck, but I must admit that my buddha didn't bring me much luck either. Your buddha must have been much smaller than mine, I don't think that I have ever seen a Buddha that small.

It is true that we learn to appreciate the things we have today when we see how things were in the past. A few days ago I visited an open air museum called "The iron age village" and there were some houses which were built according the traditions in the iron age. Their houses were so different from the houses that we live in today, and it must have been a very hard life in many ways. They had to spend hours on the things that we can do in a few minutes.

The oldest thing i own is my bible. It was a Christmas gift from my maternal grandmother. I have had it since I was 5 years old. It is ver worn but it has great sentimental value to me. My grandmother is no longer with us. I would never part with this gift from her. It's like keeping a piece of her with me always.

I feel the same way about the things that I have received from my grandmothers. Those things are very prescious to me and I understand what you mean. I have an old book that my maternal grandmother gave me. She received it as a present in 1930's, so it is quite old. It is collection of stories for children and my grandmother used to read the stories aloud to me. I will always keep that book.

Just to let you know, "Donald Duck" was mentioned in a book by Disney way back in 1931. Just a bit of trivia for you.

I have also have a few Donald Duck magazines from around that time (the 60's) They used to belong to my uncle, and we found them in my great-grandfather's house. My uncle's old room was still there, and it hadn't been touched for 40 years or something like that. It was fascinating to look at the room, it was like stepping back in history...

Hi necronomicon and welcome to MyLot!
I read about the history of Zippo lighters a while ago, and I also found some pictures of the original lighter from 1932. I guess you have been reading some of those sites as well since you were able to figure out how old your lighter is I like to read about the history of things, and I found the articles pretty interesting.

I had this stuffed animal I kept since I was 4 years old. I love stuffed animals so much and it was the first stuffed animal I had. It was a gift for my birthday from my mom's friend. My parents cant afford to buy me stuffed animals before so when I had that, I kept it close to me and until now I still have it. I am thinking that I am going to give that same gift to my daughter when she would also reach the age of 4.

I have a find from a used book store. It's a thrift edition of Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." It cost me just 15 Php (Which is like 3 cents in the US) and I couldn't have found it at a more opportune time: it was one of the books that we were talking about in class. Most of my books are rare finds, but this one was pretty and a great read.

I hadn't heard about Maya Angelou and the book "I know why the caged bird sings" so I looked up the author, it sounds like an interesting book. I have read a poem with the same words, but I am not sure who wrote it.

I don't think I ever actually bought anything old but I did receive an old satchel containing an old diary and photographs that my great grandfather carried during world war 2 (He was an imperial japanese soldier and one of the few to actually surrender themselves to the American troops instead of killing themselves for "honor").
