Ok, so i am on duty which is an all nighter, almost like a glorified babysitting job actually, but multiplied by 400 kids, and i don't get paid per kid (and kid meaning 18+)
Well anyways i got a couple of conserned students telling me that their buddy just told them that he was going to kill himself. So natually, i don't hesitate to try to help. After getting the story, finding his locker, with and empty bottle of pain medication, i call the ems notify them that there is a kid in a car on base that may have OD'd and we don't know where he is.
The story unfolds, we find the guy, he takes off after we got a knife away from him and he dissapears again. Well the base police lock down the gates searching for him and his car, they find him, take custody turn him over to me, he says he's fine, i send him to the ER and i get a phone call from the Chaplain asking about him.
Well it turns out he didn't OD, but when we initially found him with the knife he had just got off the phone with his mother telling her he loves her and the he is going to slit his wrists. I tell Chaps we found him, and he is at the ER, and he was fine. And he praises me for saving his life. Now i know i was just doing what was right and my job, but his friends saved his life. They didn't ignore the signs, and they didn't give up on finding him. I am thankful for them, and the quick action of the police, all i was, was a phone guy. Not much more that i could have done.
"So others May Live" that's our motto, and sometimes it doesn't consist of jumping out of helicopters and swimming to a rescue. Don't ignore even the smallest signs, it could mean a life that is precious to many others. He was willing to leave his 18 month boy behind, for a series of misfortunate events.
Thanks for reading
J

thank you, the looks on his friends face is how i new that they were serious, and that there was really something going on. Im not going to lie, at first i realized the student wasn't one of mine and i thought of passing the buck to the responsible authority, but the seriousness of what was happening made me realize we needed to take action. And i didn't really realize how serious it was until the chaplain called me and his friends brought me the knife they took from him

even after he got back from the ER, i was worried, but you can tell that he felt dumb and embarassed for thinking the way he was, and that he couldn't believe he was willing to risk his taking his life for his personal reasons, and leave a son behind. I believe he got the help he needed, his mother flew in today to try and spend time with him, and i guess sometimes people just need someone to talk to
