Hi All, How do you feel when you are in an alien country and you are doing sightseeing or watching places on your own? Do share any experiences of yours regarding this. Regards

I travel alone all the time now that I´m a widow. I lost my husband 10 years ago and only occationally I am able to get someone to travel with me. I have never encountered any problem in any of the several places I have been. I follow normal safety rules, the same ones I follow in my country. To begin with, I try to learn about the place where I am oing beforehand. Of course you can´t learn a language or understand a culture fully. But if you try, the approach you have is different and the response is usually very friendly. The word "alien" you used sounded to ma as little green men fron Mars. I discovered a long time ago the we human beings are all very similar. In spite of different cultures, religions, languages, we all love and hate, we all have a family and friends, we are all proud of what is ours. I usually get free guides in every country I have been to. People see me looking at a map with a lost look in my face and they come forward to be of help. If the language is an impediment, there is always the gestual language. This way I have acquired many friends from all over the world. Many of them take me to places no tourist gets to know. That way, sightseeing is turned many times in a sort of sacred pilgrimage. And I feel I´m blessed that I´m aware of this. Happy posting!

Well, even I am of the view that beneath our skins, and behind our differences of religions, class, caste, we all are one. People living in different parts of the world have similar problems, and many similar practices. Unfortunately, there are some people who do not understand this. That is why there are areas and people within a country who make travel unsafe for us. Otherwise, even I have seen that people on streets do help when we are traveling alone and asking for directions. Thanks for responding. Have a great week ahead. Regards

I think traveling to a new place is very interesting. You would meet new people, discover their traditions and cultures. Traveling would also develop your social skills and would help you appreciate places that you have never been to. =)

I've never gone sight seeing by myself before but I don't think I'd like it. I'd be scared of getting lost or getting into trouble. The last time I visited my sister in Fremont, CA I thought about going to San Francisco by myself while she was at work but I ended up not going because I was scared.

I had several trips to non-English speaking country by myself and I must say it is exhilirating though sometimes can be quite difficullt because you have to manage your difficulties by yourself. My suggestion is don't be afraid to ask (in English of course), use understandable hand or sign language if English doesn't work, bring map, and of course a warm smile are always welcomed by people.
