U.S. Beaches

I love spending my vacations on the beach. On a limited budget it's hard. Any suggestions for a beach vacation in the north eastern United States. It doesn't have to be on the ocean. I'm very happy on a lakeside beach.

How far north? The New Jersey beaches aren't bad and probably the nicest beach I ever saw was in Virginia. Can't look up and paste from my phone but it's where the wild ponies are.
