We woke up Saturday morning to no electric! No computer! (NO MYLOT!!!!!) No tv! No cooking, we are all electric! No water!!!! My 15 year old granddaughter came over and had nothing to do but sleep!!!! she was LOST with no phone! I got my pictures out and started scrapbooking our last two years to the zoo trips. We went shopping, cooked out on the grill. Had bottled water to drink and enough water in the tank to quickly wash hands after going to the bathroom. Thank God our electric came on at 8:30 Saturday night. My daughter will not get hers back until tomorrow afternoon! So how about you, what do you do?....oh I gave my 15 year old granddaughter all my ice cream to eat!!!! She liked that!!!!

I have come to the conclusion that we here in the USA do not realize how fortunate we really are as I have read some of the other post about the electric availability in other countries. Thank you so much for your comment.

there was one night that the electric suddenly went off..so the whole neighbourhood was pitch dark..we my brothers were little, they will ran to the whole house if there was black out..it was funny because there was just no electricity..that was all..but they were freaked out as if a seriel killer walked in slowly into our house to murder us all....i loved to laugh at them....but that night we sat around..like everyone gathered around and tell stories..we don't want to go out because usually it took few minutes for the elecricity to come back..so we lingered and tease one another...and that night it was full moon..so outside kinda bright a little as time passed..

I remember as a kid it seemed like every time there was a storm we lost electric for a few days. Maybe this is why it is so easy for me to just go with the flow of things?! It goes off and oh well, we have the grill to cook on and the fire place if worse comes to worse! We have kerosean lamps so we have lights, I prefer them to candles. I have lots of books to read or other things I can find to do. I think my hardest one is loosing the phone, and I now have a cell phone but was worried about the charge in it. I was going to go to our church and get water if it stayed off much longer but it didn't. Thanks for your response!

I move to my kitchen garden and work with the plants there! This gives me fresh air as well as refreshes my moods to resume my Internet session when Electricity is again transmitted! Thanks for this nice topic and have nice surfing always!!

My husband worked out in the garden. If I did anytihng with the plants it would probley be to kill them. That is his area of expertise. I did my scrapbook and was proud of myself for finishing it in one day!!!! Loosing the electric makes us realize just how much we really depend on it and after reading some of these responses realize not only how much we just take it for granted but also how fortunate we are.

I fuss alot, lol. I have been blessed to not have it off for a long time. As hot as it is here i would be really miserable w/out a/c & would be lost w/out it. I'm all electric except for a gas hot water heater. I am spoiled to having electricity & i guess like most people just take it for granted.

yes we do take it for granted!! I was so shocked. We seldom loose it. We don't have a/c so that wasn't a problem, but we couldn't run the fans! OOHH it was hot! The shopping was nice. When we got home I had all the windows open that I could. We ate out on the deck and that helped. I am wondering if we are in for a hot summer??? I can't take the heat! One year a long time ago we had a tornado go through and were without electric for almost a week! cooked on a charcoal grill, and the fireplace. Took the coolers down to church and filled them with water. They had electric!!!!

It has been unusally hot here for a couple of weeks. heat index up tp 105 alot of days. It's just miserable & i feel so sorry for people who have to work out in this awful heat. I nearly croak every time i go out. I don't perspire i sweat & mostly on my 'fat head, lol'. two showers a day if i get out & have to wash my hair 'every day' sometimes twice. I don't handle the hot weather well at all. I can't imagine being out of power for that long. I'm afraid i9 wouldn't handle it as well as u did. I'd probably go get me a motel room, lol. I sure would hate to lose the things i have in my big freezer to. I hope & pray that doesn't happen here or to u again either.

When I lived in New York we would have blackout here and there. I would get the candles out and we would sit around telling ghost stories. If it happened during the day we would cook on the grill outside and just hangout till the electric came back. I remember back in 1977 when there was a big blackout we went to the beach and cooked all our food and had a blast all day. That was when the electric was out for about 24 hours. It happened on July 13, 1977 at about 8:30pm and the lights didn't go back on till the next evening.

Wow, that left quite the impression on you to remember the date and time!!!! MY husband had gotten our kerosean lamps out and filled them before we went to town because we had no idea how long before it can come on. I am a very tolerant person so I just go with the flow! Cook the meat on the grill that was in the refrigerator and if it stayed off to long start with what thaws out in the freezer. One time we went a week without electric!!!! Thanks for your response!

I'm like you go with the flow. There is no sense in going crazy when you have no control over the situation.

My memories of blackouts from being a youngster, where always warm and cosy.. as we had a gas cooker., no interuption in having meals, and as we had an open fire warmth not an issue , and the candles, worked to read with., so it was always a time of cosy feelings and something to get passed.... Now, with no gass, would miss having my cup of tea... :( and in the day light hours would carry on painting or writing., as am old school and use a pencil and pad!! Would sew or knit ordo something creative., as for meals hope that had bread for sandwich and keep fridege and freezer shut to conserve the cold..... Having no phone or computer wouldnt bother me as, not an avid user of technology but would sympathise with those who are., not having water would be the worst i think, as not being able to have a shower and again a cuppa would be the most irritating.... but glad your grandaughter enjoyed her ice cream... i would be with her on that :) and that you got your power back on before it became to difficult... Bless xxx

ahh you must sew by hand. I have never been able to do that. I wouldn't be able to sew as my machine is electric and I always press my fabric and pattern before I start and my iron is electric too. I never learned how to knit or crochet. I was never patient for sitting that long. I was fortunate in that our electric wasn't off long enough to notice the shower. When I was working I remember it being off and having to heat water on teh burner on the grill to wash up with before work. glad it wasn't long!!! The ice cream was the only thing I 'lost' with this outage. I didn't have much meat and cooked that up that night. Nothing in the freezer thawed out so was safe there. It is nice meeting you thank you for your reply.

Yeah, we don't know how much we can't do until we loose the electric. This was so unexpected, the storm had passed on Friday night and we were fine through it. I was so shocked when I woke up Saturday, look at the time and the clock was blank!!!! My granddaughter was tired from being at youth camp all weekend so she took the ice cream and went home!!!! I don't even know if she shared with her sister!!!! Thanks for your response.

When I lose electricity at my house, it can be an inconvenience. I am usually involved in something where electericity is necessary. This never fails to happen. Until power is restored, I light some candles and wait.

I have had it happen when I have had a cake in the oven or making frosting and yes it is a major inconvience! We so seldom loose it anymore that this was a big surprise! Friday night when the storm came I was thinking I had waited to long to cook supper but it only flickered a few times then it stayed on, so it was a total shock when I got up Sat am and the clock was a blank. Thank you for your comments.

We had woke in the morning to no electric so he cleaned the yard up from the storm, I went to church and worked on some things for Sunday morning, then we went shopping. When we came home it had dried off enough that he could mow the yard so he did that and I worked on my scrap book album. I wasn't feeling like doing to much work as I was suffereing from some side effects of a prescription that the dr put me on. Thaks for your comment.

Well, I get really pissed off! And whine alot! Then I would be calling the electric company until they give me answers. It is not that I am impatient, what kind of place would have electricity being cut off all the time?

I am just the opposite of you, I just go with the flow. Although the storm had gone through Friday and we were ok I don't know if another went through during the night and we slept through it or if something else happened. I just know the electric company will have it back on as soon as possible and it so seldom happens. We had things we could do and did. It just proves how much we depend on the electric in our lifes. Thanks for your comment.

At first, I would lose my temper because I spend a lot of my free time on the computer. Though about an hour later or so, I would start playing on my PSP, and my iTouch. Then the rest of the day I would find a book to read till I fall asleep on my bed (though I tend to finish the book and if its a series, I might be up for a day or two to finish it). If that doesn't work, then looking through photo albums, and biking around the neighborhood. Though it seems you enjoyed your day without no electricity. xD

I go with the flow. I didn't even call the electric company. I figure they had enough people calling and it didn't matter, they canonly get it back on so fast. We had to once go a whole week without electric because of the tornado that went through. It was an experience, but I am not totally helpless so we survived. Thank you for your response.

Having no electricity is not much of a problem althought it ruins the lifestyle of soooo many people, haha, who wouldnt agree with that? Well, i keep in store a few magazines to read just in case there is a brownout. I also keep a backup electric lamp that you can charge when there is electricity and use when there is a power shortage, it comes useful especially during the night when i read the magazines. Another thing, our water supplies will run out it our electricity goes out, so i usually store up our pails with water whenever we lose electricity. Another thing i do when we lose electricity is use my cellphone and have fun SMSing others or play games on a portable gaming device like a PSP.

We so seldom loose electric that we never store up the water, just a waste. We have in the past went to our church and got water cause they have always had electric or get it back on first. It was just during the day so nothing was a real problem. We use kerosean lamps and my husband had them filled so we were ready for Sat night but never needed them. Thanks for your reply.

Here in India we are facing a terrible power crisis. There is no electricity every day at fixed time, at some places for 6 hours, 8 hours, and 12 hours. At my place, there is power cut for 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening. We had to manage with UPS. Last week I had to replace the battery. After few days, the UPS conked off. I had another spare UPS. There was power fluctuation and this had burnt down my spare UPS too. I went and bought a new UPS. It worked fine for a day. Next day I woke up early at five in the morning because I knew there would be no electricity at six. Suddenly the voltage shot up to 300 and everything was in darkness. My New UPS was burnt down again. Together with it my two spike guards, two mobile chargers, my speaker too were burnt. I am now waiting for the service personal to replace the UPS. Today I woke up again because there will be no electricity after six for three hours. When there is no electricity, I try to surf through my mobile. During day I read newspapers or simply go back to sleep. Our politicians are claiming that soon turn into super power but right now the common man is reeling under the super power cut.

I cannot imagine how to live my life centered around when the electric is off and on. You have proved to us here in the USA how wonderful and lucky we have it. It is a rare thing for us to loose electric.
