i was wondering about this when i was out for dinner a couple of days back. i ordered some nice chicken & greens and a side order of mash potatoes.. at the next table, they had some other dish and potato wedges. the table behind me had that criss-cut fries.
well, wedges & fries i understand..maybe our ancestors got bored of boiling potatoes and using them in stews & curries that they started to cut it up and fry it. and then maybe they got board of cutting it up the same way all the time, and started to make square holes in it..hence the criss-cut fries we have today.
but how the heck was mash potatoes started? how did that guy who started making mash potatoes know when to stop? and how did he know which gravy that goes so well with it?
this mash potato thing is getting to be a real mystery for me..
i do appreciate serious views..but i appreciate your most spectacularly hilarious views even more
thank y'all

yeah...maybe someone got tired working with potatoes...maybe those potatoes were not doing their job properly and the guy got upset. and then started bashing the potatoes up. and then when it got all pulpy and mashy...he realized that 'hey, it actually taste nice..'
oh my...those brownies i made tonight were gooood..

Someone probably cooked up some boiled potatoes and was going to serve them to his guests. On the way to the table, though, he tripped and fell on the boiled potatoes and squished them. Since he did not want to waste all those potatoes (not to mention the fact that he didn't have enough time to prepare anything else), he decided to serve them anyway and call them "mashed potatoes" and pretend like he had prepared them like that on purpose.

Thanks Meluan. Can't you see it happening, though? Some guy gets clumsy and falls landing on all the potatoes, and then looks around to make sure that nobody is looking and dusts them off to get out as much dirt as possible, puts them back in the dish and pretends like nothing happened?

it's so coincidental PA..! that sounds almost exactly like how 'the first bum print was created in mash potatoes' story sounds like
a very 'squishy' story..

Mashed potatoes probably evolved from leftovers. I know that a lot of the most yummiest dishes started from housewives who did not want to put food to waste and used their ingenuity to transform dishes that would probably be thrown away. I like mashed potatoes too, but not too much because I am trying to avoid carbs now.

hi anne
yup, housewives are always ingenious with their solutions for leftovers.. and i'm starting to think that this may have really started from leftovers too

Dropped it on the floor butter side down, stepped on it, couldn't afford to waste it?

Hey mario! I have no idea how mashed potatoes came into being!
But, I'm sure it was some pissed off woman who was sick of peeling
the damm potatoes, cutting them, slicing them, boiling them
and then decided to beat the sh!t out of them! That would be
my guess, ya know! I love french fries, wedges and baked potatoes!
I don't care which way they're sliced! But, I don't do mashed
anymore! I have finally found a company that makes them from
a box that tastes almost like the "real thing"! I love "Betty
Crocker"! They have found a way to make the best mashed potatoes
ever and they even have different variations! I love the Garlic
Mashed the best! It's takes less than 10 minutes and is so much
fun! All you have to do is boil water, add the mixes, some butter
or marjorine, stir and mashed potatoes! I love Betty Crocker!

hiya Opal
i like those instant things in a box that are just like the real thing..it always amazes me at how by 'just adding water' a tasty dish can be prepared in a mater of minutes
if only i could carry out that concept for some other things too..
'Excuse me sir, I need some money..'
'You do? hold out your hand and take this little tablet'
'What..?! ok, gimme that tablet thingy'
'Here, let me add a drop of water....and "Presto!" '
'Wow, 50 bucks! thanks mister mario sir..!'
haha...i think i should stay off the rollies for a while..

and i do hope the plants turn out better soon...are you giving it enough light & air? and it wouldn't do too well if there are big temperature variances (hot days and cold & bitter nights..) hope it turns out ok dear

I wish I knew the answer to this question. It probabbly started out as an accident. Then it probably caught on a new way to eat potatoes.

Ya those boy scout days , we do learn lot of backwoods skills how to cook in jungle and such.Even cook awhole chicken, with beggar style, clean the chicken, throw out the intestine and such, then stuff with rocks and then wrap a good layer of mud all over the chicken ,and then throw inside fire.Surprising, when the mud is removed , the hair get stuck with the mud. It eatable, if your are really really hungry i guess.

Hi mario,
I actually wonder who first dug up a potato and thought," hmmm, this looks delicious. I think I'll eat it." I mean, seriously, when you pull a potato out of the ground, it really doesn't look all that appetizing. I don't even think raw potatos even taste all that good although some people do like them for some reason. And how did they know that eating one wasn't going to be deadly? How the heck did they even know to pull one up?

now that you mention it...yeah, i've been kind of wondering about that too i mean, did the first person who tried to eat something from the Potato Patch start by nibbling on the leaves and stems. maybe the leaves were a bit tasty and then when humans were getting more nomadic in their habits, wanted to replant this leafy thing..and when they pulled it out of the ground.. 'voila!' there was a potato hanging. after nibbling on it a little bit, they then decided that a potato should be washed first before eating it (maybe because the dirt got stick between their teeth..), and then they discovered that if the skin is peeled away, it taste even better..! only to realize a hundred years later that having the skin on the potato is 'fashionably gourmet'..
well...if i were writing the history books, this would be my rendition of it

hmmm....it's a real mystery to me. i was wondering about the thought process going through the mind of the person who first prepared it.. but that churn theory is pretty much close to what i've been reading on the internet
