Adopted a New Dog... What Breed Is He??

We just adopted a 2 year old terrier-ish dog from a local rescue. His name is Gus. He is about 9 pounds (he needs to gain about 3, he's skinny). We have NO idea what breed he is! Our best guess so far is Australian Terrier... but we aren't positive since his personality is VERY mellow and submissive (this might be from his crazy life so far). He's only barked once!
He uses the bathroom like a cat (digs a hole and buries it), he hides "chewies" from our other dog by burying them in the couch cushions or in a hole in the yard, he smiles when he's excited, and he "bops" unknown objects repeatedly with his nose. He is very submissive, snuggly and sweet.
What are your breed guesses?
(The first 2 pictures are from before his haircut, the 3rd is after... the 4th is just cute!)

How adorable! I'd only be guessing at his heritage, but if you really want to know, you can have his DNA analyzed. It's good to know what types of breeds are in a dog, so you know what genetic problems you might possibly be dealing with in the future, and catch them early while they're still easy to treat or even prevent. Or just because you're totally curious!

Hi Jillbeth! Thanks for commenting!
We were thinking about getting the "swab" just to see... We are curious. It's just really fun to play the "What the heck IS he??" game... lol... I keep telling my bf he's really a ferret and not a dog (he keeps stealing our things and hiding them around the house lol!)
My best friend and his wife have a completely weird looking dog... I suggested that they get him genetically tested to see what he really is, but they prefer the mystery lol. My money is on Akita x Shepard... but I don't think we'll ever know with that one (unless I steal some of his epithelials!

He does look like some kind of terrier, and he is very cute!

To me it looks like there is some Yorkshire Terrier in there

which wouldn't be surprising if he's all or part Australian Terrier as it is one of the ancestors of that breed.
I'm sure he will come out of his shell once he realises he has good home.
