After we have the kids, it is important to keep them healthy, and once i nearly forgot about their oral hygiene. Teaching your toddler how to properly brush his teeth can save you and your tot frequent trips to the dentist. Start early on educating your toddler about the proper ways of brushing his teeth and your child will surely thank you in the future for doing so. As early as six months, babies are able to take in solid foods in addition to their regular intake of milk. By this time, you probably have already introduced oral hygiene to your little one by cleaning his gums with a wet washcloth. However, when your baby turns into a toddler, it is time to switch from the good old washcloth to the more efficient soft-bristled toothbrush when it comes to cleaning your toddler’s teeth. Toddlers may not be able to properly clean their teeth yet, so it is the task of the parents to make sure they clean their teeth well by doing the brushing for them. Since brushing one’s teeth can be more of a chore for a small toddler, it is important that parents make the activity fun and interesting. In order for your toddler to fully understand the importance of good oral hygiene, you as a parent need to set an example. Brush your teeth together and demonstrate to your tot the up-and-down and side-by-side motion of brushing. Make the activity as pleasurable as possible by singing songs about tooth brushing. You can even turn tooth brushing into a game. The one who gets the cleanest mouth (read: the one who brushes longer) wins. The idea of tooth brushing is to get rid of plaque on your toddler’s teeth and remove all traces of food on his mouth and tongue. When it comes to choosing the toothpaste for toddlers, some parents go for the non-fluoride toothpaste. Non-fluoride toothpaste is recommended for toddlers who do not know how to properly spit yet. If your toddler is using toothpaste with fluoride, put only a pea-sized amount on his toothbrush and make sure that he spits it and rinses his mouth well with water. If your toddler uses too much fluoride, he can get fluorosis or white spots on his adult teeth. Good dental habits can start as soon as your child gets his first set of teeth. Teach your toddler the proper way of brushing his teeth by making the activity fun but educational. Make tooth brushing, an essential part of toddler care, a habit for your little one.

Hi, Brushing my teeth is very important task to be done everyday, at least twice a day. Frankly speaking, when I was young, I only brush my teeth once a day,in the morning and I totally omit the night brushing before goes to bed. Only when I entered my university, I have this new habit to brush my teeth at night. I definitely like the fresh breath at night..I can sleep more soundly too. Since I have a kid, I have the same practice to train my son to brush his teeth twice a day. When he was a baby, I will use a small towel to clean his gums and teeth. Till when he reached 1.5 years old, I bought a baby toothbrush, very soft to brush his teeth, still without toothpaste. When my son reached 2 years old, I bought him a toothbrush and started teaching him how to brush his teeth. Slowly I teach him how to spit out water from his mouth. When He really know how to do it, then Only I use toothpaste for him every time when brushing his teeth. There are many kinds of kids toothpaste available in the market and my son is currently using Cussons brand.I bought it from Indonesia and i can't find it in Malaysia here. I might consider buying Darlie kid toothpaste for him in future. Darlie has been my favourite brand of toothpaste and I believe my son will love it too. We are brushing our teeth together everyday,it is very fun activity.

I so agree. I was never taught oral hygiene and I am sure paying for it now. I am nearly 60 and am real trouble. I have decided to just get dentures because my mouth is in such a state of decay. I wish I had had someone teach me early on how to have good oral hygiene.

Hi! Are you a dentist? Sadly, I was not able to monitor the oral hygiene of my two-year old son. His milk teeth already has cavities. Do you have any suggestion what to do if his milk teeth are not that perfect anymore?

Hello vingyan, this is really a great topic. I am a soon to be mom and I find this post really helpful and informational. I learn a lot from you post and will take note of this when i give birth and when my baby becomes a toddler. I know oral hygiene is very important to everyone, young and old. But parents will play am important role to instill this to the young ones. It pays off to train kids when they are younger than they grow older.

Thanks for the great idea on how to make brushing teeth for toddlers more fun. I currently have an 8 month old son and since he still can't brush his teeth on his own I do it for him. Good thing that he loves brushing. He even cries once I stop brushing his teeth. Lolz. He is so cute, funny and adorable. As early as 1 year old we would already start going to his dentist as advised by his pediatrician. It's better to start his regular monthly check- up with a dentist as early as 1 year old. It will be tiring though because aside from his regular monthly check- up with his pedia, my monthly regular check- up with my OB- Gyne there will be another activity in a couple of months and that would be a monthly regular check- up with his dentist. Since I'm a new Mom and currently 7 months pregnant with my second child I rely too much on the advice of the experts (pediatrician, OB and dentist) specially that I live alone with just my hubby and a hired helper. My Mom and hubby's Mom lives miles and miles away from us so no one is here who can teach me the do's and dont's of motherhood. Thanks again for sharing this helpful information. Happy Mylotting and take care!

Hi vingyan! That was a really useful blog! I am going to forward it to my sisters who have 3 naughty kids who never quite find fun in brushing. Oral hygiene is important we all know but its more important to educate the children in a fun way. I learned many things from the article also. I just hate to floss. I probably, am doing it all wrong. May be, I need another article from you to educate myself.

ningyan06 hi a g reat dicsussion and you will have helped a lot of new parents to know how to teach their little ones good dental hygiene when they are young. I am so remiss myself as I am elderly and have some teeth missing as I am not wealthy enough to fork out hundreds 'of dollars to fix my teeth. but I must bring myself to restart my own dental hygiene .I taught my own two children good hygeine but now one is deceased the other a grown man,its time for mom to restart her own good dental hygiene herself.,
