Some people just gobble their food continuously when they are depressed. Oh! They can finished packets and packets of chips within minutes. They spend their time eating and eating in order to forget their problems. There are also people who lost their appetite totally for a few days because of depression. Admittingly, there are other ways to cope with depression. But as far as food consumption is concerned, do you eat more or less when you are depressed?

Thanks so much for your reply, oOjopakDo. Drinking may help to lighten depression. Of course, the amount you will consume will depend on the intensity of your depression which means that you would probably have drink more to overcome higher degree of sadness. Am I right?
The amount which you need to drink in order to be effective, would also depends on the kind of drinker you are. Seasoned drinker will need stronger or drink greater strength and amount. Although the amount you drink may be small. oOjopakDo, I hope you would stop drinking as it may affect your liver in the long run.
It is good to adopt other healthier ways which will not compromise your health in any way like listening to songs and music or singing your favourite songs as you like eventhough you do not have much talent in singing.
Have a nice day, oOjopakDo.

I definitely eat more. When I'm depressed, I usually go to fast foods, because I crave for salty and fatty foods. And I eat a lot of chips. That's why I really do try to always be happy and not feel sad, because once I'm there, I can't really stop eating, because I feel that I need to comfort myself from the sadness.

Yeah, I think I need to find healthier ways of coping with my depression, maybe even jogging or sometimes, so I can cure my depression and at the same time I can be healthy.

Thanks Ingkingderders. As long as it helps you to overcome your depression, it is fine to consume more food. However,it is better if you can adopt other ways of coping with depression like going to the park, see cinema shows, swimming, skating, etc.
Anyway, it is good to know that you can handle your depression well.
Thanks again and take care.

I seldom release my depression through heavy eating. But I will choose to take food that will make me happy. Therefore, I will take chocolate and coffee when I feel depressed. Besides, I will do exercise. Either way can make myself feel happy and forget about depression.
Thanks for having such interesting discussion, and have a nice day!

Thank you for sharing your method of coping with depression. Yes, some people preceive food as a source of happiness that why they choose to gobble a lot of it to forget their depression. They are usually not mindful of what they are eating so they just kept gobbling . Their mind is probably too occupied with thoughts or sadness.
I think to take just one or two kind of food to keep us happy when we are depressed is probably a better idea than gobbling lots of food which is unhealthy. And of course, exercise to make us happy or too exhausted to remember our depression is also recommendable as it will benefit our body by keeping it active. However, if a person is depressed, he or she will probably not fare well in terms of performance.
Admittingly, exhaustion does help us to forget our depression. That's a good suggestion and thanks.

Thanks, Bogdan for your comment. It is actually fine to eat some food when we are depressed but consumption of too much food is bad for health.
To you life may be short but we still need to take good care of our health. No matter how short our life span may be, it is the quality of life that counts. Poor health will definately affect our quality of life. Don't you agree?
Have a good day!

Thanks Ilbo 1981 for your reply. Some people lose their appetite when depressed.
Admittingly, women are more emotional so they get depressed easier than men.Not surprising,if you find women eating away because of depression.
Yes, walking in the streets or parks can help to relieve our depression.
Please don't hesitate to share other method to overcome depression if you have,Ilbo.

Whether I am in a bad mood, depressed or emotionally sensitive due to hormones, there are different stuffs that I want to do. Well, there are times that I want to eat alot or crave on foods. There are also times that I want to go out like I need fresh air or there are also times that I want to do a marathon watching a movie. Sometimes, I just want to be alone as if I wanted to write and write or be in the computer the whole day. I have several outlets when I am depressed. Sometimes I do want to cry and cry then after which, I would already be fine.

Thanks,maean_19, for sharing your various ways of coping depression. It is good that you are capable of conquering depression and not allowing it take control over you. As for me, I would lose my appetite and if I continue to be depressed for a few days, I will look very drained. Hence, I would rather go shopping marathon sometimes and divert my thoughts to something else. Although, I would prefer to spend time alone but my friends are usually able to detect my depression easily and would spend time with me. Actually, it is good to have friends that really cares for us especially when we are depressed.
Thank you for caring and participating in my discussion, maean_19.

I do seem to eat quite a bit more when I am depressed about something. The more intense the depression, the more I will consume. Food is a comfort release. Sometimes we just can't help ourselves.

Food can make us happy and comfort us especially if one loves food very much or when we are hungry. But when we are depressed ,our mind is disturbed so we are not concentrating or even bother to notice what we are eating. So we ended up globbling food. This is not an ideal method to apply as it will cause our weight to hike.
Admittingly, sometimes our depression may be too great for us to handle but we can still overcome it somehow especially with the help of GOD, friends, lovers, relatives even our pets. I remmebered how my dog used to lick my face once when I was crying and depressed. It invited me to go running together and was chasing each other and soon I forgot my depression. Great pets can also help because they love us.
Take care and have a good day.

Food is a necessity for a living human to sustain his life. But sometimes, it serves us beyond its main purpose. When we're feeling gloomy, we find food to lighten up our mood. People say that when a person is in a state of depression, there's a huge possibility that he would gain weight. In situations like these, food does not only function as a source of nutrition but also a source of happiness. Foods that give the feeling of satisfaction and contentment are called Comfort Foods. Comfort foods are usually cooked in a place where you feel comfortable or relaxed. Places like home, school, or some local restaurant are where we usually eat our comfort foods. It removes the feeling of nostalgia and it gives delight not only to our starving stomachs but to our lonely hearts as well.Personally, I really enjoy the dishes that my mom cook for our family. Filipino dishes like Sinigang, Adobo and Bulalo are some of my favorites. Some restaurants might also have them but my mom's will always be the best. Well, at least for me. Now that I'm staying in Manila for my college education, I really do miss the food that my mom cooks for me and my family. College life would be much easier if I could eat my mom's specialties everyday. Just as the saying goes, there's no place like home.
Another personal comfort food are French Fries. I prefer making my own fries from fresh potatoes than buying a processed one because it taste more natural. Plus, any food is more delicious if you were the one who prepared it. Actually, I love every potato dish out there but fries are my favorite because they are fast to prepare and easy to eat! My dad always reminds me that it can absorb a lot of oil and cholesterol but I just eat it anyways. I guess you really just don't care if you get fat because of your comfort food. As long as you're in bliss, you would never think of getting fat!
Happy mylotting to you guys!

When I was depressed before, there was no difference with my appetite. My meal will just be delayed because I feel lazy going up, but if the food is in front of me, I just eat the normal amount of food as when I am not depressed. I don't crave for any food. I just want friends to talk to. So my appetite is not really affected because of depression. I don't eat a lot because I know that will just add up to my depression if I get fat. Probably I just know how to handle depression.

Thanks so much for your reply, dian21. Good to hear that your appetite is unaffected when you are depressed. Yes,we will feel lighter and forget our depression when we have good friends who are will share with us our good and bad times. They can really make us happy again and sometimes they may even be more sad than you when they get to know our sorrow for they really care for us.
It is certainly good of you to know how to control your depression and not let depression control us. Your life is much happier and I am happy for you.
Have a good day!

Yes, it is so true that when our mind is pre-occupied with depression or other negative feelings, we may not have the urge to eat. Of course, our appetite will be better if we are eating with our loved ones, family members, close friends and people we like. We will also consume more during happy occasions and if the food served are delicious and also clean, comfortable environment.
However, it is good not to impose too much tension on our mind so you still need to implement mothods to cope with your depression. How do you manage your depression so far?
Hope to hear from you,moumitabagchi.

Eating a lot may hurt. There are friends who can comfort you. If none, why not pray. Read the Bible and trust God for His promises. He comforts the weary and gives hope to the hopeless. Its true.

Hi, blou020714. It is good of you not to bottle up your depression within you. Bottling up all negative feelings in very harmful for the self and even if it exploit, the consequences will bring negative effect on the family members or whoever is near you.
I am glad that depression does not affect your appetite much. Generally, depression can have negative effects on our body and soul. There were studies which revealed that deep depression can cause mental breakdown and serious illness like cancer.
Other ways of conquering depression include going for excursion, cinema shows, and keeping ourselves occupied with our hobbies, singing, dancing, swimming, painting,
art and craft, sleeping, SPA treatments, suana bath, yoga, meditation, praying, playing musical instruments, listening to music, watching television etc.
Thanks for your participation.
