Positives of The Net

Many people who aren't experienced with the Net will often ask why we bother with it, or why we don't "get a life". Some people are afraid of it, believing all manner of horror stories about lurkers, stolen identities, crime and threats. Some dismiss it as frivolous. Some find it distasteful. As with anything in life, the Net appeals to each of us in different ways, and offers each of us something different.
What have you gained from your online life? Is it a harmless pastime for you, a way to fill your spare time with fun and casual conversation? or perhaps it fills a different need: for communication & friendship, for meaningful conversation & stimulation, for information & support? Why do you choose to enjoy these things online instead of "in real life"? Is there even a difference?

Good question on there, is there any difference?
I feel as if I have a link to the outside with with the internet.
I can talk to people and have some very wonderful conversation with very interesting people. People across the states to across the world! I would not have this oppurtunity if I did not have the internet.
Information. I am a useless information junkie. I love reading and learning things that I really have no need for. Or even school work. The kids need homework help and I am not sure if I got the concept right. Look it up on the internet! You are bound to fine something!
I love reading. Think of an author and look him or her up. Almost any working author today has a webpage to promote their books. Thus, it makes it easier to find my next reading materials.
Shopping for books. I love amazon.com and it is so safe. But even better. If that book is out of print, they have vendors on amazon that sell used books! This allowes me to be able to get my hands on any book I want for the right price. I would not be able to do that from the little small town I am in without the internet.
I could go on and on about the internet....
pay bills, no more paper bills (save a tree), no more stamps, online baking (check free, no fees), school online, jobs, people, old friends and new ones...it has so many possiblities, I know I have not done it all.
Can it be distasteful? Yes. But as in life, there must be balance. For you would not have good, if you did not know what bad was.

I don't think there is a difference. This is real life. I make my living on the net and I keep in touch with family and friends who live far away. I research the things that I buy and find answers to questions that I have on the net. My husband and children are all skilled in using the internet. There is no harm if you are careful. It can be a wealth of knowledge and a place to meet people around the world.

I have found a lot of postive things about using the internet like keeping in touch with family and friends that live long distance, make new friends, online shopping, selling items you don't need anymore, it is good for those who are self employed, you can take college classes online, making money from sites like these and others, research different things and more. Lots of postives. I may have missed some others. :-)

One thing you didn't mention is how many people use it for work. I am able to live in Arkansas and work for an office located in Massachusetts. The freedom and flexibility of the internet has opened up whole new worlds for people in regards to employment. As for the personal aspect - I find that the Internet is my main reference tool, and also a way to hone my writing skills.
