What Do You Think of the New Doctor Who?

With the new series of Doctor Who just one episode from the end (in the UK), I wondered what you have all thought of it. There have been many changes this time - a new Docxtor (Matt Smith), a new companion in Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan), a newly designed TARDIS and a revamped theme tune. So what do you all think? And what has your favourite episode been? I have been a fan of Doctor Who since I was a child in the 1970s and have seen all the existing episodes from 1963 onwards. To me, Matt Smith is already the best Doctor. He epitomises all the qualities you need in the character and despite Matt's youth, he has really raised to the challenge and convincingly plays the old, wise Doctor. I love Rory too and think he is a great addition. Amy is okay, but her constant pouting annoys me. My favourite episode so far has been Vincent and the Doctor, who I loved on several levels and it made me cry. But really, there hasn't been a bad episode all series, though my least favourite was probably the one with the Smilers, which I didn't think worked quite as well as it could have done. So, what is your opinion??

I am not into Dr Who as much as you but I watch it when it is on because hubby loves it. I do like the new Dr Who, he's a good actor anyway which helps. However, I have the same opinion as yourself about Amy..that pouting REALLY gets on my nerves, plus the constant "surprised" expression. I know that, traditionally, the female assistants tend to be a bit naff but I never thought I'd wish Billie Piper was back in it! I also like her who used to be in ER...she's been in a few of the recent episodes and I reckon she should be the next assistant because she can ACT! Does the music in the background ever get on your wick? I can't abide it.

Yes, Matt Smith is an incredibly talented actor. I loved him in Party Animals. He is very charismatic. I know just what you mean about Amy! I wish the Doctor had ditched Amy and kept Rory, as that would be a much more interesting partnership! Yes, Alex Kingston is great as River Song and really lifts any scenes she is in. Interestingly, Karen/Amy kind of disappears into the background when Alex/River is on screen. Yes, the music can be annoying. We found a thing on the TV where you can adjust it so the voices are louder and the music is quieter and that really helped.

Well, our telly is old but John can put the sound on mono mode which does help a lot. I just wish the music wouldn't play when all they are doing is talking. I really like Alex Kingston, she made her name in that boddice-ripping drama a few years back. Then she did ER of course (I love her hair, I wish I had hair like that) so I was chuffed that she was back in the UK, starring in Dr Who. Do you think she may become Matt Smith's assistant in the next series? There is a chemistry between them I really like...and I cannot stand Amy when she's in life-threatening situations and chooses to quip jokes! Why does she do that? I'd be terrified, haha!

o yes have to agree. alex kingston is a gorgeous and brilliant actress and the tongue in cheek humour that she has in this series is great for her!

I've been pleasantly surprised by Matt Smith. I thought he was way too young for the part when he was first cast, but he seems very natural in the role - much more natural than Tennant was. Still a bit too eccentric at times (we're supposed to believe that he doesn't know about football despite having lived in Britain for several years during the Pertwee era) but still pretty good. Personally, I think next time they should cast a much older actor as the Doctor, but I'm hoping Smith will stay around for a fair while anyway. I like the new Tardis console room, and I also like Amy and Rory. The standard of the stories this season have been generally fairly high, especially the Vincent episode, although I think the current monster rally has gone a bit over the top. I'm not keen on the redesigned Silurians, too human looking. Nice to see the Autons making another appearance, I've always liked those, but thumbs down to the overweight plasticky new Daleks. Also nice that we've now got an explanation for some of the continuity glitches that have come about since the series was relaunched. Overall, yes, thumbs up, more please.

Yes, I thought Matt was too young at first, but he is brilliant, absolutely perfect for the part! Rory is fantastic too. I would like the next Doctor to be in his 40s, maybe someone like Paterson Joseph.

The smilers? I think my favorite episode was The Lodger, I just loved the humor in that one. I agree, that Matt has really stepped up to the plate and is handing down one of the best performances we've seen in the role. I have to say that Tom is still my favorite Doctor. But really, what do you think? What will happen when we get to the last regeneration? I personally think that taking in the Eye of Harmony reset the regenerations OR has given him endless regenerations - but I hope the writer who writes that last episode has a good hand with the Doctor thinking its his last.

Yes, the Smilers were those heads in a box in The Beast Below, they look a bit like ventriloquist's dummies and I don't like those. I'm sure the writers will have plenty of ideas up their sleeves to change things so they don't run out of regenerations!!

Well, I don't watch a lot of television, so unfortunately, I haven't seen the new Dr. Who. I guess I need to probably see if I can find an episode or two over the world wide web. Now you have peaked my interested. Shame on you, Karen. lol

I haven't seen the new Doctor Who yet, I guess I feel like it will just be let down because I really loved Doctor Who when David Tennant was the Doctor. I mean, he was my first doctor so he'll always be my favorite haha. I don't have BBC in my cable plan anymore, so I'll have to find the show online to watch.

I loved David Tennant too and didn't expect to like Matt Smith as much, especially with him being so young, but he is PERFECT in the role and (whispers) even better than David!! You should definitely watch it!!

I personally thought that the new Dr Who series is brilliant. It just has so many different and funny new sayings, like Bow ties are cool, and I can always buy a fez. I think at the begining of the series, some of the episodes were slightly hit and miss, but after that rough begining, I personally felt that the series improved dramatically. Its crazy, when David Tennant was Dr Who, i thought that noone could replace him, now i feel that matt smith might just be better for the job!!!

I completely agree! I thought David was irreplacable but now feel Matt is even better!

Why didn't you tell us when it was beginning? I'm going to have to look hard to find some episodes. I used to watch Dr Who back in the early 80's. I believe the Doctor was Tom Baker back then.

Tom Baker was great in the role too. He's my favourite Doctor along with Matt Smith.

i too have been a fan of the doctor since a child... i confess i hid behind sofa on more than one occasion when the cybermen appeared! i have to commend the standard of script writing for this series, so very complex but excellently written! i had my doubts when david tennant was brought in, but boy o boy did he make the role his own! to that end i really felt for matt smith coming in to take over! he has done really well and somewhat in the role of where david tennant had gone, as continuity of the character.. think he's doing really well! last week's episode was so very well written and i can't wait for tomorro's final episode!!! x

Yes, David was great, but I think Matt is even better!! What did you think to the series finale? I thought it was excellent and good to have an uplifting end episode too. Can't wait for the Christmas Special now!!
