Can you get allergies?

Okay, so as far as I know, I wasn't born with any allergies. But lately, sometimes when I pet my cat my eyes get red and puffy like I'd assume one would react with a cat allergy (or is it like being allergic to bees, and you'd get allergies all over you body?) So what I'm asking is if you can grow an allergy? Or is it some stray hair that he dropped because of the summer heat, and somehow got in my eye?

Yes, you can develop diffenrent allergies as you get older. This can go the other way also, you can out grow being allergic to somethings. Try taking some kind of antihistimine and see if your symptoms go away. If they do then you are more than likely allergic to something in your environment. Keep track of what you are around when these symptoms start up and start narrowing down what you are allergic to. If you feel that it is your cat, there are shampoos that are made to reduce cat dander. Try bathing him in it to see if it reduces your symptoms. Then only other way of finding out what all you are allergic to is to go to an allergist and allow them to do allergy test. They will ususally do small skin scrapings on your back and arms to see what makes you welp up.

Well that answers that, very informative answer. Just a quick one, since allergies come in various levels, can you develop a serious one, borderline killer, or since you develop it at a later stage, your immune system can somehow make it from getting worse? The only problem now is to wash the cat, I doubt he'll let me get him any where near the shower...

I have never heard of anyone developing life threatening allergies in later life, but I guess anything is possible. The best thing to do is to monitor changes closely and if you start feeling swelling in your throat or if you are unable to breathe get medical help immediately. As for washing the cat, not much I can say to help you there. Other than make sure you have a good set of leather gloves and good luck.

Well, the thing you're talking about can really be an allergy. It's not unusual that one might develop an allergy during his/her lifetime. For example in my childhood I was able to eat the raw carrot, but now I get an allergic reaction every time I do this. But there is a positive effect too: you have a chance to grow the allergy out too. I used to be allergic to chocolate, citrus fruits, honey, coconut, tomatoes. Now I have grown these allergies out and I am very happy about it.

Seems like a pretty good trade if you ask me, raw carrots for chocolate, coconut, honey...

Yes, as others have said, you can develop allergies at any time and seemingly for no reason. I was never allergic to anything until the last few years, now it seems like I'm allergic to everything! Especially good food. ;)

Thanks for the reply anyways, bummer about your allergies. Getting used to something good just to get smacked in the face and seeing it being taken away from you.
