If you want to read a really fun series of murder mystery books you should try the Mr. Monk series. Its based on Monk the television show and told from the perspective of his assistant. I don't know how much like real detective work it is but it's fun.

I guess this book is perfect for you: The Encyclopedia of Crimes and Punishments from H.S. Stuttman Publishers. We bought a copy of it years ago, and we enjoyed reading it. Based on your expressed interest in reading murder stories, I guess, you'll really like it!

I love these stories too! I would recommend Agatha Christie's books, which are awesome, even if they are pretty old by now. Also, Harlan Coben, a more modern author, is really great!
If you like seeing movies and tv-shows like this, the British show Midsomer Murders is really nice, and also the movies based on Agatha Christie books.
Looking forward to reading more recommendations in this discussion!

You can try reading books by Karen Rose, Karin Slaughter, James Patterson, Kathy Reichs, David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, and Lee Child. Most of their books are detective/mystery/forensic books. You can search for other authors like her at fantasticfiction.co.uk. I hope the link helps.

Most of the Ann Rule books are true stories from police files. She is a good writer and keeps you guessing till the end. The was another author I enjoyed reading but right off hand I cannot remember. I actually like murder mysteries but moreover true crime murders.
